Seven Senses of the City : Urban Spacetime and Sensory Memory in Contemporary Sinophone Fiction

The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the narrative mechanisms and imagery that fictional works employ to conceptualize and communicate complex human experiences of space, time and memory. Furthermore, this study shows how contemporary cities change the way we think about such basic concepts by analyzing narratives that employ and encourage multisensory, spatiotemporal understanding

Bayesian model selection with fractional Brownian motion

We implement Bayesian model selection and parameter estimation for the case of fractional Brownian motion with measurement noise and a constant drift. The approach is tested on artificial trajectories and shown to make estimates that match well with the underlying true parameters, while for model selection the approach has a preference for simple models when the trajectories are finite. The approa

The City is a Journey : Heritage and Memory in Zhu Tianxin’s Novella ‘The Old Capital’

Zhu Tianxin’s novella The Old Capital narrates the process of slowly losing contact with the past through forgetting, loss and material erasure. Instead of completely eradicating the past, this process prompts a renewed interest, and, in a sense, a renewed presence of that past in conscious remembering, literary evocation and narrative attendance. Inspired by David Crouch’s conception of heritage

Seasonal migration patterns of Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope) facing the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

Background: Small songbirds respond and adapt to various geographical barriers during their annual migration. Global flyways reveal the diverse migration strategies in response to different geographical barriers, among which are high-elevation plateaus. However, few studies have been focused on the largest and highest plateau in the world, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) which poses a significant

Association between habitual dietary taurine intake and the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease : a prospective cohort study

Taurine, an amino sulfonic acid abundant in seafood and meat, has been proposed to have a potential role in the prevention of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the association between dietary taurine intake and MASLD remains unclear in human populations. Also, data on dietary taurine intake among adult

Investigating highly replicated asthma genes as candidate genes for allergic rhinitis

Background: Asthma genetics has been extensively studied and many genes have been associated with the development or severity of this disease. In contrast, the genetic basis of allergic rhinitis (AR) has not been evaluated as extensively. It is well known that asthma is closely related with AR since a large proportion of individuals with asthma also present symptoms of AR, and patients with AR hav

Co-infection with 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' and Borrelia afzelii in an Ixodes ricinus tick that has bitten a human in Romania.

Despite the vast importance of ticks as disease vectors, the infectious agents transmitted by ticks are still incompletely known in many areas. Here, we report for the first time the detection of the bacterium 'Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis' in Romania, in an Ixodes ricinus tick obtained from a human. Furthermore, the tick also had a co-infection with Borrelia afzelii. 'Candidatus Neoehrlichi

The History of the European Colloid and Interface Society

The European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS) was founded in 1986 to provide a European meeting place for scientists interested in colloids and surfaces, including both chemists, physicists, biologists, and colleagues interested in applications. The annual September conferences have from the start attracted strong interest and in recent years 500-1000 scientists from most European countries ha
