Helena Storsten - Benzi - Reading Revolution

Helena Storsten - Benzi - Reading Revolution The idea started when Ida and I was given the task to create a business plan in the course Entrepreneurship at Umeå University. We pitched the idea for the class and got great feedback and continued to analyze the potential and the interest from the publishers. Benzi Revolution AB was initiated in January 2014, when the programmers Sameh and Jean-Paul j

Short-range remote sensing of water quality by a handheld fluorosensor system

Laser-induced fluorescence is a powerful measurement method for determining the concentration of organic pollutants as well as the amount of algae in water. It can be applied in remote sensing of natural waters and has the advantages of high speed and sensitivity. In this paper, we present a compact handheld fluorosensor system for water quality assessment. The power of the technique is demonstrat

How can Asian Encounters help expose blind spots in sociological research?

How can Asian Encounters help expose blind spots in sociological research? During its 27th biannual conference, the Nordic Sociological Association (NSA) hosted the panel discussion Asian Encounters – Exposing or creating blind spots? Building on the theme of the conference – Exploring blind spots, the panel discussed the drawbacks and merits of studying Asia, as well as encounters between Asia

Evidentiality in Akha

In the Akha language - a Tibeto-Burman language - marking of evidentiality is obligatory. The evidential system marks whether a statement is based on factual knowledge or inferred from seeing, hearing or feeling. It also marks whether the speaker makes a statement without being asked or as a result of a question or a reaction to something happening. The evidentials are marked by high tone for non-

Quantitative measurement of hydroxyl radical (OH) concentration in premixed flat flame by combining laser-induced fluorescence and direct absorption spectroscopy

An accurate and reasonable technique combining direct absorption spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) methods is developed to quantitatively measure the concentrations of hydroxyl in CH4/air flat laminar flame. In our approach, particular attention is paid to the linear laser-induced fluorescence and absorption processes, and experimental details as well. Through measuring the tempera

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering on dual-layer metallic grating structures

Dual-layer Metallic grating (DMG) structures as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are studied using benzenethiol as the probe analyte. The DMG structure consists of a SiO2 grating and 100-nm-thick gold coating layers. An enhancement factor of 10(5) is achieved by optimizing the SiO2 grating height within the range from 165 to 550 nm. The enhancement factor dependence on the SiO2

Design as an integrating factor in an international cross‐disciplinary innovation course

Today, innovation is a key word for many universities, as it constitutes an important part of most universities’ public and scientific interaction with society. Many universities are striving to increase the number of innovations spun out. At many universities, innovations are thought of as being sprung from research projects and generated by researchers. However, Sandström (2014) claims that whil

Male-biased sex ratios in Australian migrant populations: a population-based study of 1 191 250 births 1999-2015

Background: The naturally occurring male-to-female (M/F) ratio at birth is 1.05. Higher ratios found primarily in countries across Asia have been attributed to prenatal sex selection due to son preference. There is growing evidence that sex-selective practices continue following migration; however, little is known about these practices following migration to Australia. Methods: In this population-b

En åtgärd som ansetts vara nödvändig som underlag för utvecklingsarbetet har varit att kartlägga olika länders praxis för utbildning av läroansThe Finnish National Board of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, has started to develop the training of rectors in a more systematic way by utilizing the funds which were allocated for the Osaava programme. One of the pre-liminary measures in this regard included a survey concerning the continuing education practices of school leaders on a worldwide basis. The

Northwestward shift of the northern boundary of the East Asian summer monsoon during the mid-Holocene caused by orbital forcing and vegetation feedbacks

The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) northern boundary is a critical indicator of EASM variations. Movement of the boundary is modulated by both the EASM and the mid-latitude westerlies. Here, we use the Earth system model EC-Earth to quantify the contribution of orbital forcing and vegetation feedbacks in modulating the movement of EASM northern boundary. The results show that the simulated EASM
