Superfluid : How a Quantum Fluid Revolutionized Modern Science

Unless you are a specialist or watch a lot of obscure YouTube videos you have probably never heard of He II or superfluid helium. This substance, a unique liquid form of the element helium, is produced and used in multi-ton quantities to enable much of modern science. Altogether, He II is at the heart of more than a dozen large scale scientific facilities world-wide representing an investment of t

Balancing innovation, 'ordre public' and morality in human germline editing : A call for more nuanced approaches in patent law

This chapter analyses the role that 'ordre public' and morality exceptions can play in the granting of patents on inventions in the field of human germline editing and the consequences of this policy option. In order to provide the context for such an analysis, the chapter will, first, provide an overview of the current patent landscape for relevant genome editing technologies, drawing attention t

‘Bildung Life’ : Holistic Ideals of Hip Hop Education

Over the past fifteen years, Hip Hop–based education has gained ground in academic literature, especially so by building on the educational tradition and gospel of Each One Teach One. A contribution to this scholarly discussion is the Scandinavian attempt to analytically tie Hip Hop education to perspectives on learning and pedagogy that traditionally derives from popular movements of the twentiet

Systemic intermediaries and the transition toward forest-based bioeconomy in the North

The activities of cluster initiatives operating as systemic intermediaries and supporting networking activities have been discussed in prior studies. We integrate insights from the cluster theory and the literature on sustainability transitions to study the activities of clusters acting as systemic intermediaries in the different phases of the development of a forest-based bioeconomy, namely (1) p

Examining the uptake of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses among healthcare workers in South Africa : A mixed-methods study

This study aimed examin the factors associated with the uptake and non-acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses among healthcare workers (HCWs) in South Africa. We used a mixed-methods design with data from a web-based self-administered survey followed by semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs) with selected participants. Of the 6235 HCWs included in our analysis who had fully vaccinated, 3

Simultaneous positive patch test reactions to neomycin and low-molecular-weight heparins : possible cross-reaction?

BACKGROUND: A patient received enoxaparin sodium subcutaneous injections for prophylaxis after surgery and developed inflammatory skin reactions on injection sites on Day 5 after the first administration. Patch test was performed with baseline series and low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) at different concentrations and showed positive reactions to neomycin and LMWHs. Cross-reactivity between n

The Human Being as a Creator of (in) Human Life : The Example of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus

Humans have an inquiring mind. Throughout history, one may find documentation that shows on human curiosity, and our drive to stretch boundaries to satisfy it. Thus, this is not something that characterizes our time in any particular way. Sources, for instance, from the 13th century can serve as good examples that support such an assumption. Mary Shelley’s novel from the 19th century, “Frankenstei

The Plot Against America : Kontrafaktisk historieskrivning med politisk udd

The Plot Against America is a 2020 American tv-series, created by David Simon and Ed Burns. It consists of six, one-hour long episodes and was produced by Home Box Office. The series is an adaptation of Philip Roth’s 2004 novel. It is built on a counterfactual and para-fictional historical narrative, depicting the years 1940-42. Here, the hero pilot Charles Lindbergh becomes American president in

Coarse-grained tight-binding models

Calculating the electronic structure of systems involving very different length scales presents a challenge. Empirical atomistic descriptions such as pseudopotentials or tight-binding models allow one to calculate the effects of atomic placements, but the computational burden increases rapidly with the size of the system, limiting the ability to treat weakly bound extended electronic states. Here

The sensitivity of ginkgo leaf unfolding to the temperature and photoperiod decreases with increasing elevation

Climate change substantially affects plant phenology, resulting in earlier vegetation onset across temperate and boreal regions. Phenological shifts caused by warming may alter species interactions across trophic levels because of species-specific responses, and influence the reproductive success of dioecious species if the phenological sensitivity to warming (ST) differs between genders. We used

A critical review of the use of lipid signature molecules for the quantification of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi

Tools for accurate measurements of microbial biomass/abundance are imperative in soil ecology. This perspective was prompted by a lack of consistency in how the neutral lipid fatty acid (NLFA) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) 16:1ω5 are used to estimate arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal abundance, which we argue can lead to erroneous conclusions within studies and complicate among-study compari

High-resolution carbon isotope chemostratigraphy of the middle Cambrian to lowermost Ordovician in southern Scandinavia : Implications for global correlation

Continuous and biostratigraphically well-constrained carbon isotope (δ13Corg) profiles through the upper Miaolingian (middle Cambrian) to Tremadocian (Lower Ordovician) part of the Alum Shale Formation in four drill cores from southernmost Scandinavia are described. The sections record seven Furongian (upper Cambrian) excursions/spikes, of which three appear valuable as auxiliary markers for ident

Computational Analysis Reveals Monomethylated Triazolopyrimidine as a Novel Inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 RNA-Dependent RNA Polymerase (RdRp)

The human population is still facing appalling conditions due to several outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. The absence of specific drugs, appropriate vaccines for mutants, and knowledge of potential therapeutic agents makes this situation more difficult. Several 1, 2, 4-triazolo [1, 5-a] pyrimidine (TP)-derivative compounds were comprehensively studie

Springtime Stratospheric Volcanic Aerosol Impact on Midlatitude Cirrus Clouds

Explosive volcanic eruptions can reach the stratosphere and cause elevated concentrations of sulphate particles for months to years. When these particles descend into the troposphere, they can impact cirrus clouds though to what degree is unknown. In this study, we combine three satellite data sets to investigate the impact of downwelling sulphate aerosol on midlatitude cirrus clouds during spring

Quantum Confinement Suppressing Electronic Heat Flow below the Wiedemann–Franz Law

The Wiedemann–Franz law states that the charge conductance and the electronic contribution to the heat conductance are proportional. This sets stringent constraints on efficiency bounds for thermoelectric applications, which seek a large charge conduction in response to a small heat flow. We present experiments based on a quantum dot formed inside a semiconducting InAs nanowire transistor, in whic

Linear strain and stress potential parameters for the three fundamental band to band transitions in β-Ga2O3

We report the strain and stress relationships for the three lowest energy direct band to band transitions at the Brillouin zone center in monoclinic β-Ga2O3. These relationships augment four linear perturbation parameters for situations, which maintain the monoclinic symmetry, which are reported here as numerical values obtained from density functional theory calculations. With knowledge of these
