Resonant photoemission at the Ga 3p photothreshold in InxGa1-xN
Resonance effects at the Ga 3p photoabsorption threshold have been observed in photoemission spectra recorded from thin film InxGa1-xN alloys. The spectra display satellites of the main Ga 3d emission line, and the intensity of these satellites resonate at this threshold. The satellites are associated with a 3d(8) state, and have previously been observed for the semiconductors GaN, GaAs, and GaP.
Nocturnal application of transdermal estradiol patches produces levels of estradiol that mimic those seen at the onset of spontaneous puberty in girls
The objective of pubertal induction in children with hypogonadism is to mimic spontaneous puberty in terms of physical and psychological development. In a clinical observation study, we induced puberty in 15 girls with hyper- or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism using low doses of transdermal estradiol patches attached only during the night and compared the estradiol concentrations obtained with those

The 1.80-1.74-Ga gabbro-anorthosite-rapakivi Korosten Pluton in the Ukrainian Shield: a 3-D geophysical reconstruction of deep structure
The deep structure of the gabbro-anorthosite-rapakivi granite ("AMCG-type") Korosten Pluton (KP) in the northwestern Ukrainian Shield was studied by 3-D modelling of the gravity and magnetic fields together with previous seismic data. The KP occupies an area of ca. 12,500 km(2) and comprises several layered gabbro-anorthositic intrusions enveloped by large volumes of rapakivi-type granitoids. Betw
Asymptotic Expansions of Crossing Rates of Stationary Random Processes
Popular Abstract in Swedish Korsningsintensiteten for en stationär stokastisk process är ett värdefullt verktyg när man studerar fördelningen för våghöjder och för maxima av havsnivån. Denna avhandling betraktar två approximationstekniker för fall då korsningsintensiteten inte kan ges exakt.Båda tekniker använder en asymptotisk expansion, och första och andra ordningens termer i denna approximatioThe crossing rate of a stationary random process is a valuble tool when studying crest hight distributions and maxima of sea level elevation. This thesis considers two approximation techinques for cases when the crossing rate cannot be exactly computed. Both techniques use an asymptotic expansion, and the first and second order terms in these expansions are given explicitly. Paper A describes how
A high-resolution core-level photoemission study of the Au/4H-SiC(0001)-(root 3 x root 3) interface
We present a systematic study of different reconstructions obtained after deposition of Au on the (root 3 x root 3)- R30 degrees- 4H- SiC( 0001) surface. For 1-2 monolayers ( ML) Au and annealing temperature T-anneal similar to 675 degrees C, a 3 x 3 reconstruction was observed. For 4 ML Au and T-anneal similar to 650 degrees C, a ( 2 root 3 x 2 root 3)- R30 degrees. reconstruction appeared, while
Lifetime measurements and terminating structures in Nb-87
Two experiments have been performed using the Ni-58(S-32,3p) reaction at 135 MeV with Gammasphere and the Microball to study the high-spin structure of the transitional nucleus Nb-87. The first experiment using a thin target provided a considerable extension and refinement of the level scheme, as well as firm spin assignments from directional correlation of oriented nuclei. Sub-picosecond lifetime
Pollution of the Natural Environment and the Dissolution of the Soviet Union
Gorbachev’s environmental policies aimed at raising the masses and incite them to action for the common good. A side effect was the introduction of the factor information in Soviet society. Thereby centrifugal political forces were released. These forces rallied behind environmental issues of local, and thus local ethnic significance. The ensuing political mobilization was nationalist in spirit.
Myoelectric control of a computer animated hand: A new concept based on the combined use of a tree-structured artificial neural network and a data glove
No robust conclusions to be drawn from clinical trials in the absence of an adequate control group.
Women living alone have an increased risk to develop diabetes, which is explained mainly by lifestyle factors.
OBJECTIVE— The purpose of this study was to assess the role of household conditions for the progression to diabetes in women with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS— A total of 461 women, aged 50–64 years, with IGT defined by an oral glucose tolerance test, had baseline advice on physical exercise, diet, smoking, and alcohol habits. Physical examination, blood tests, an
Job strain, decision latitude and alpha2B-adrenergic receptor polymorphism significantly interact, and associate with higher blood pressures in men.
Background Job strain (high demands and low decision latitude) and the DID genotype of an I/D polymorphism in the adrenergic alpha(2B)-receptor have been associated with hypertension, respectively. We hypothesized that the I/D polymorphism interacts with external stress, such as job strain, in the development of hypertension. Methods A sample of 3045 employed men and women from the population coho
Field comparison of inhalable aerosol samplers applied in the European rubber manufacturing industry
Several studies have been done in Europe to evaluate exposure to dust and fumes in the rubber industry. However, different aerosol sampling devices have been used which perform differently depending on the environmental conditions and particle size distribution. To compare measurements of rubber dust and fumes among countries and surveys we initiated a field comparison of personal inhalable sample
Extension of Pozharitsky theorem for partial stabilization of a system with several first integrals
The paper is devoted to an extension of one particular fact withintheory of partial stability, the so-called Pozharitsky Theorem,to the case of partial stabilization of nonlinear controlled system. It is shown that under appropriate assumptions partialstabilization of the system based on usage some Lyapunov functionconstructed from first integrals of the unforced system, impliesthat the Lyapunov fu
Extracorporeal whole-blood immunoadsorption enhances radioimmunotargeting of iodine-125-labeled BR96-biotin monoclonal antibody
This study investigates the efficacy of tumor radioimmunotargeting with 125I-labeled BR96-biotin monoclonal antibody using a new method, whole-blood immunoadsorption (WBIA), based on direct adsorption of unbound monoclonal antibody (MAb) from blood without preceding separation of plasma. METHODS: Highly tumor-reactive, internalizing, chimeric BR96 MAb of isotype IgG1 binds to a tumor-associated Le
Global dispersion of right atrial repolarization in healthy pigs and patients
Objective - To investigate the feasibility of monophasic action potential ( MAP) mapping using an electro-anatomical mapping system ( CARTO) in obtaining information on global dispersion of atrial repolarization and to evaluate the role of dispersion of repolarization in the genesis of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation ( PAF). Methods and results - Right atrial MAPs were recorded from 53 +/- 18 sites
alpha(1)-Microglobulin: a yellow-brown lipocalin
alpha(1)-Microglobulin, also called protein HC, is a lipocalin with immunosuppressive properties. The protein has been found in a number of vertebrate species including frogs and fish. This review summarizes the present knowledge of its structure, biosynthesis, tissue distribution and immunoregulatory properties. alpha(1)-Microglobulin has a yellow-brown color and is size and charge heterogeneous.
