Two labdane diterpenoids and a seco-tetranortriterpenoid from Turreanthus africanus

Examination of the methylene chloride soluble portion of the acetone extract of the seeds of Turreanthus africanus yielded two labdane diterpenoids 12,15-epoxylabda-8(17),12,14-trien-16-al (1) and 16-acetoxy-12(R),15-epoxy-15β-hydroxylabda-8(17),13(16)-diene (2) and a limonoid, 17-epi 12-dehydroxyheudebolin (3). Structures elucidation was based on the analysis of spectroscopic data.

Isothermal calorimetry approach to evaluate tissue damage in carrot slices upon thermal processing

The purpose of this investigation was to test calorimetry as a means of quantifying cell damage occurring at various stages of mild blanching treatments. Calorimetric measurements were carried out on cores taken from carrot slices blanched at 100 degreesC for 5-45 s. The calorimetric data were corrected for the influence of wounding stress due to slicing and coring. The validity of calorimetry to

Colour vision in diurnal and nocturnal hawkmoths

Diurnal and nocturnal hawkmoths (Sphingidae, Lepidoptera) have three spectral types of receptor sensitive to ultraviolet, blue and green light. As avid flower visitors and pollinators, they use olfactory and visual cues to find and recognise flowers. Moths of the diurnal species Macroglossum stellatarum and the nocturnal species Deilephila elpenor, Hyles lineata and Hyles gallii use and learn the

Energianvändning i småhus, Bo92.

Modelling of Mass and Heat Transport in Paper - Evaluation of Mechanisms and Shrinkage

In this work a one-dimensional model for the mass and heat transport in the thickness direction of paper has been developed. Solid-based coordinates were applied to simplify incorporation of shrinkage. Liquid diffusion, gas convection and vapour and air diffusion were incorporated as mass transport mechansims. In the heat balance the convective heat transport and heat conduction were included. Spe

Transmembrane topology of the NuoL, M and N subunits of NADH:quinone oxidoreductase and their homologues among membrane-bound hydrogenases and bona fide antiporters

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-reduced form (NADH):quinone oxidoreductase (respiratory Complex I), F420H2 oxidoreductase and complex, membrane-bound NiFe-hydrogenase contain protein subunits homologous to a certain type of bona fide antiporters. In Complex I, these polypeptides (NuoL/ND5, NuoM/ND4, NuoN/ND2) are most likely core components of the proton pumping mechanism, and it is thus importa

Judges', lay judges', and police officers' beliefs about factors affecting children's testimony about sexual abuse

The authors examined Swedish judges', lay judges', and police officers' beliefs about factors that may complicate or facilitate children's reports of sexual abuse. Participants (N = 562) rated potential complicating and facilitating factors and freely reported which criteria they considered important when assessing the reliability of child witnesses. The groups had similar opinions regarding which

Are Hartree-Fock atoms too small or too large?

We address the simple question, whether Hartree-Fock atoms are smaller or larger than exact (Schrodinger) atoms. As a measure, we use . We study the ground state of the atoms He-Kr. The unrestricted Hartree-Fock method is used. To obtain the Schrodinger values we use the finite field CASPT2 approach, and the full CI scheme where possible. CASSCF calculations are also reported. Very large basis set

Human glandular kallikrein 2: a potential serum marker for predicting the organ confined versus non-organ confined growth of prostate cancer

PURPOSE: We measured serum levels of human glandular kallikrein 2 (hK2) in patients with prostate cancer treated with radical retropubic prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer to determine whether preoperative hK2 levels discriminate stage pT2a/b from pathological stage T3a or greater cancer. This finding would help to predict preoperatively the organ confined versus non-organ conf
