Interstitial Laser Thermotherapy of Liver Tumours. Methodology and Application

Interstitiell laser termoterapi (ILT) med Nd:YAG laser är en ny behandlingsform, som ger de tekniska föInterstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) is a method well suited for selective local destruction of malignant tumours. In the present work, a laser thermotherapy system based on feedback temperature control of energy delivery (through computerised feedback system) was developed. Temperature control was excellent in experiments without carbonization and with preserved light penetration, whereas tempe

The Lure of Origins : An Inquiry into Human-Environmental Relations, Focused on the ”Neolithization” of Sweden

Popular Abstract in Swedish Syftet med denna avhandling är att bidra till diskussionen om den s k neolitiseringen av Sverige. Först genom en kritisk granskning av aktuella forskningsrapporter angående tidigneolitikum i framför allt Mellansverige, vilken bl a visar att "jordbruk" var av marginell betydelse under lång tid efter ca 4000 f Kr, samtidigt som idén om "övergången till jordbruk" begreppslThe purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the discussion of the deeper meaning, in our contemporary context, of the ”neolithization” of Sweden. The basis for the investigation is twofold: * a critical examination of recent research reports dealing mostly with the Early Neolithic of (Middle) Sweden which shows, inter alia, that ”agriculture” was of marginal importance for a very long tim

Haplotypes defined by promoter and intron 1 polymorphisms of the COLIA1 gene regulate bone mineral density in women

CONTEXT: The COLIA1 gene is a strong candidate for susceptibility to osteoporosis. The causal genetic variants are currently unclear, but the most likely are functional polymorphisms in the promoter and intron 1 of COLIA1. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether promoter and intron 1 polymorphisms of COLIA1 or haplotypes defined by these polymorphisms regulate bone mineral d

Use of experimental design in development of a catalyst system

NOx storage and reduction experiments have been performed with stationary operation of a heavy-duty diesel engine rig. An optimization of the NOx reduction performance has been done using experimental design. The adjustable parameters in this study were cycle time, injection time, injection rate and bypass time (period of reduced flow through catalysts). NOx was reduced by 50-60% (3.3-4.1 g/kWh) w

{beta}-Cell Lipases and Insulin Secretion.

Lipids have been implicated in ß-cell stimulus-secretion coupling. Thus, lipases in ß-cells would be required to generate coupling factors from intracellular lipids. Indeed, we found that glucose stimulates lipolysis in rodent islets and clonal ß-cells. Lipolysis and diglyceride lipase activity in islets are abolished by orlistat, a pan-lipase inhibitor. Moreover, orlistat dose-dependently inhibit

Effects of bulk inversion asymmetry and low interface symmetry on the optical properties of broken-gap heterostructures

We have studied the influence of bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA) and the relativistic part of the low-symmetry interface Hamiltonian (IH) on intersubband optical transitions, induced by linearly polarized light, between strongly hybridized electron-hole states in asymmetrical InAs/GaSb broken-gap quantum wells grown along the [001] direction. The self-consistent calculations were performed using th

GRB 030227 : The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB

We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected byINTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~ 1.7days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim opticalafterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previoussearches due to its faintess (R ~ 23). This OA was seen to declinefollowing a power law decay with index alpha R = -0.95 +/-0.16. The spectral inde

Fast, narrow-band computer model for radiation calculations

A fast, narrow-band computer model, FASTNB, which predicts the radiation intensity in a general nonisothermal and nonhomogeneous combustion environment, has been developed. The spectral absorption coefficients of the combustion products, including carbon dioxide, water vapor, and soot, are calculated based on the narrow-band model. FASTNB provides an accurate calculation at reasonably high speed.

Central projections of olfactory receptor neurons from single antennal and palpal sensilla in mosquitoes

In insects, olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are located in cuticular sensilla, that are present on the antennae and on the maxillary palps. Their axons project into spherical neuropil, the glomeruli, which are characteristic structures in the primary olfactory center throughout the animal kingdom. ORNs in insects often respond specifically to single odor compounds. The projection patterns of the

Search for excited leptons in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s=189-209 GeV

A search for excited lepton production in e(+)e(-) collisions was performed using the data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 GeV to 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 600 pb(-1). No evidence for excited lepton production was found. In searches for pair-produced excited leptons, lower mass limits were established in
