Serving Aristocracy : Negotiation, Learning and Mobility in an Early Modern Knowledge Community

Serving Aristocracy is the history of social negotiation and mobility in an early modern knowledge community, centred on the aristocratic De la Gardie family and their sphere of manors and estates in seventeenth-century Sweden. Focusing on underprivileged women and men and the knowledge community that shaped their interactions, social negotiations, and mobility, this book documents ordinary people

Associations between cerebral small vessel disease and reduced forced vital capacity and expiratory volume in a general healthy Swedish elder population study-Good Aging in Skåne

BackgroundCerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is one of the most important causes of cognitive decline. Only a few previous studies have evaluated lung function measures in relation to brain neuropathological changes, and even less studies on specific lesions and areas that could shed light on mechanisms of CSVD.ObjectiveThe aim was to study the association between lung function and CSVD in the g

Sex-and depot-specific differences in cellular insulin responsiveness during adipose expansion

AimsAdipose tissue distribution, metabolism, and expansion capacity exhibit notable sex- and depot-specific differences. Herein, we monitored adipocyte traits related to insulin responsiveness and glucose transport during adipose expansion in visceral and subcutaneous fat from male and female mice.Material and methodsAdipocytes were isolated from perigonadal and inguinal adipose tissue of chow-fed

Focal Adhesion Kinase Orchestrates GLUT4 Translocation and Glucose Uptake via Cytoskeletal Turnover in Primary Adipocytes

ABSTRACT Intact insulin signaling and glucose transport in adipocytes are crucial to maintaining whole-body energy metabolism. Focal adhesion kinase stands as a central intracellular protein facilitating signaling between the extracellular matrix and the cytoplasm, thereby regulating cellular metabolism. Here, we have investigated the role of focal adhesion kinase in adipocyte glucose transport us

The Land of Opportunity? Social Class, Returns to Migration, and Occupational Mobility of Swedish Immigrants, 1880–1910

I study the economic returns to migration among Swedish immigrants in the United States in 1900 and 1910, by social class. Using linked data from full-count Swedish and US censuses via the Swedish Emigrant Register, I first estimate the rates of return to migration using two identification strategies, with the returns exceeding 60 percent, notably higher for migrants from lower social classes. Fur

Testing and Establishing of Material Models for Rubber Gaskets in Heat Exchangers using DIC

Examensarbetet är gjort i samarbete med AlThe aim of this master's thesis is to establish material models for three rubber materials using macroscopic data collected using Digital Image Correlation, DIC. DIC is a non-contact optical technique for measuring strain and displacement in a material by tracking points on a material during the deformation process.\\ The rubber materials are tested in both uniaxial tension and compression, fr

Leveraging Edge Computing for Real-Time Traffic Management and Simulation with SUMO in Smart Cities

Traffic congestion is a persistent problem in modern urban environments, causing delays, increasing pollution, and negatively affecting the quality of life of millions of city dwellers. As urban populations grow, the need for intelligent traffic man- agement systems becomes more pressing. This thesis presents a novel approach to real-time traffic management using edge computing in conjunction w

Challenges and the Way Forward in a Difficult Development Landscape: Achieving a Sustainable Future in Africa and Its Sahel Region

This handbook brings together a collection of seminal research on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and investigates the effectiveness of the 17 goals for achieving transformative change toward sustainable development. As a collection of inter- and transdisciplinary research from around the world, this volume explores the applications, implications, and best practices of the goals at thematiWhen the world committed to end poverty and hunger as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the promise to “leave no one behind” was recognized as both an ethical responsibility and a key criteria for success. How can we make sure that such a promise becomes a reality, and what challenges lie ahead? This chapter aims to address these issues by focusing on parts of the world that, despi

Är hållbarhet H&M:s utopi? En kvalitativ undersökning av H&M:s hållbarhetsrapporter

In this bachelor’s thesis, “Is Sustainability H&M’s Utopia? A Qualitative Analysis of H&M’s Sustainability Report”, we investigate H&M’s journey towards sustainability through an analysis of their sustainability reports from 2002, 2012, 2022 and 2023. This analysis is completed with the help of Ernst Bloch’s theory of utopia, performativity theory, Marxist theory and decolonial theory.

Det kroppsliga spektrumet inom modets olika visuella narrativ: En komparativ analys av produktbilder från modeföretaget Très Bien & e-handelsbolaget Zalando

With the definite dialectic relationship between the fashion industry and models, this bachelor’s thesis seeks to research the usage of models’ body types in relation to two different fashion companies. These two companies consist of Très Bien and Zalando, which occupy different spaces of the larger fashion landscape, with Très Bien being a smaller and more alternative fashion company and Zalando

In the Mood for Likes : A Longitudinal Study of Civil Society Organizations’ Emotional Communication on Social Media

Emotional communication, especially through social media platforms, has become a contemporary populist threat. While this phenomenon has been studied in for example news media and social movements, we know less about its influence on civil society organizations, despite their pluralism being a centerpiece in a vibrant democracy. More specifically, we do not know if social media make civil society

Sensorimotor functions, visuospatial perception and visuospatial abilities in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder

Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate sensorimotor functions that require cerebellar processing, and visuospatial perception and visuospatial abilities in adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Method:We included patients with unmedicated ADHD (n = 52), medicated ADHD (n = 39), ASD (n = 33), the combination of unmedicated

T2 cytokine-driven alarmin and antiviral responses in asthma: insights into immune modulation and the role of IL-4Ra targeting

Ptychographic reconstructions performed in real time and offline have equivalent quality

Ptychography is a burgeoning imaging technique that enables high-resolution, lensless reconstruction of complex samples by analysing overlapping diffraction patterns, making it invaluable in fields like materials science, biology, and nanotechnology. Real-time ptychographic reconstructions are gaining interest in the scientific community as they provide immediate feedback. Yet their potential to r

Associations between plasma proteomic signatures and secondary sleep in older adults

Sleep disturbances are prevalent among elderly populations and are linked to various health complications. Understanding the underlying biological mechanisms contributing to sleep disorders is crucial for developing targeted interventions. In this study, we measured 355 plasma proteins in an elderly Japanese cohort (n=77) using a high-throughput proteomic platform. Additionally, we collected over
