The aim of this study is to compare knowledge-driven and data-driven methods for susceptibility mapping in spatial epidemiology. Our comparison focuses on one of the arguably most important requisites in such models, namely predictability. We compare one data-driven modelling method called Radial Basis Functional Link Net (RBFLN - a well-established Neural Network method) with two knowledge-driven

Temples in China participate in the competition for believers and are active players in the religious economy. The managers of the most successful new temples engage in strategic decision making about marketing, promotion, innovation, and public activities to increase the visibility and appeal of their temples. We illustrate with examples and data from our studies of eight new temples to the d

Popular Abstract in English Yeasts are eukaryotic microorganisms classified as fungi and consist of a number of species. The english word ‘yeast’ (as well as its equivalent in many other languages) is based on the words ’foam’ and ’to rise’ – and thus direct references to the fermentation process that produce beer and bread (Kurtzman et al., 2011). Some yeast species are known to be pathogens for The non-conventional wine and beer yeast Dekkera bruxellensis is of great interest for the food industry and academic research. This Crabtree-positive yeast is a good ethanol producer and can compete the baker´s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in ethanol and pH tolerance and could be an even better organism for the biofuel production from alternative carbon sources. D. bruxellensis is considered t

Provet utföres i ett ljudisolerat rum meA phonetogram is a diagram displaying sound pressure levels (SPL) of softest and loudest possible phonation over the entire fundamental frequency range (F0) of a voice. Female singers mean phonetogram had a significantly higher upper contour than female nonsingers. When reading at various voice levels female singers produced markedly higher mean equivalent sound pressure levels (Leq) and mean rel

The period from 1910 to 1930 was a time when a number of theoretical systems saw the light of the day in Central Europe: psychoanalysis, neopositivism, phenomenology, the Warsaw School of logic, Gestalt-psychology and the structuralism of the Prague School of Linguistics. The Prague School arose in the liberal-minded Prague of the 1920s and came to have an enormous influence on multiple fields wit

We describe an automatic system for pose-estimation from a single image in a city scene. Each building has a model consisting of a number of parallel planes associated with it. The homographies for the best match of the planes to the image is estimated automatically for each of the possible buildings. We show how the estimation of the homographies can be done effectively by reducing the search spa

The overall level of education is increasing in Europe. This article focuses on women's educational attainment and especially on differences in expansion rates in Germany, Portugal and Swedn. The author argues that an understanding of the expansion of the number of women in education must consider - in addition to the structure of the educational system - recent economic, demographic, social and c

Climate change is the single most important global environmental and development issue facing the world today and has emerged as a major topic in tourism studies. Climate change is already affecting the tourism industry and is anticipated to have profound implications for tourism in the twenty-first century, including consumer holiday choices, the geographic patterns of tourism demand, the competi

Stimulated emission on three UV transitions in Cd$+$ has been observed by transferring population from inner-shell d-electron states, populated by photoionization, to outer-shell p-electron states using the output from a narrow-frequency dye laser. The use of similar techniques in other elements could eventually result in a number of new lasers in the UV and VUV.

This paper presents our contribution in the closed track of the 2008 CoNLL Shared Task. To tackle the problem of joint syntactic--semantic analysis, the system relies on a syntactic and a semantic subcomponent. The syntactic model is a bottom-up projective parser using pseudo-projective transformations, and the semantic model uses global inference mechanisms on top of a pipeline of classifiers. Th

A high surface impedance can be achieved in a limited frequency band by using composite structures. Based on the principles of causality, passivity, linearity, and time translational invariance we demonstrate that this bandwidth is bounded by the thickness and magnetic polarizability per unit area of the structure at normal incidence.
