Radiographer's Experience of Encountering Children Suspected of Being Abused

Introduction: Child abuse is a global public health problem. It poses a threat to both physical and psychosocial well-being, resulting in serious consequences for the child, the family, and society. Radiographers are in a unique position to identify children at risk. In clinical practice, they may observe unusual interactions between children and their caregivers during radiographic procedures or

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), driven by cues from the tumor microenvironment, is a critical initiator of metastatic progression. In breast cancer patients, elevated expression of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) is associated with shorter survival and increased metastatic risk. Here, we investigated the role of COMP in regulating EMT in breast cancer. Breast cancer cells tr

The Importance of Infrastructure and Road Safety Culture for Pedestrian Safety : A Comparison of Three European and Three African Countries

Walking is a primary mode of transport in urban Africa, yet it remains unsafe, challenging, and unpleasant. In contrast, several European countries have implemented systematic policies to promote walking through Safe System principles. This study compares pedestrian safety in three African countries (Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia), with three European countries with excellence in road safety and Safe Sy

Ozonation before and after nitrogen removal: Consequences for ozone demand in light of the new urban wastewater treatment directive

Micropollutant removal is a key component of the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) and can be achieved with ozonation. During ozonation, the composition of the wastewater matrix and the targeted treatment level for individual micropollutants or groups of such compounds affect ozone consumption. In this work, it was hypothesized that nitrite scavenging, the point of dosing (befor

Insulin resistance is associated with incident prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in normoglycemic individuals

Aims: Testing insulin resistance could help improve physician assessment of patients’ risk of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes (T2D), even among normoglycemic individuals. Methods: The longitudinal study followed 16,333 normoglycemic participants in a nation-wide employer-sponsored health assessment program starting in August 2020 with a median follow-up time of 2.9 years for incident prediabetes or

Case Study on the Application of Machine Learning in Hydrology

This thesis presents a case study on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in hydrology using two approaches. This topic was chosen since AI is an important tool, and water is a vital resource. The first case is on leakage detection with artificial data, while the second is on precipitation prediction with real data. For leakage detection, a random forest (RF) model and an artificial neuWater is the most vital resource, yet globally, 30% is lost through leaks. By implementing artificial intelligence (AI), this thesis has developed methods to locate leaks with high precision, as well as models to improve accuracy on satellite-based precipitation data. This thesis investigates two applications of AI on real-world problems; detecting water leaks and improving precipitation data. Th

Electrocardiographs before 1910 : Manufacturers and surviving instruments

Background: Early electrocardiograph predates electronic amplification and therefore required innovative and highly sensitive instrumentation. Willem Einthoven's introduction of the string galvanometer in 1903 enabled recording of clinically useful electrocardiograms and established electrocardiography as a diagnostic method. Objectives: To describe the provenance and technical features of a uniqu

Autoimmune (Type 1) Diabetes Mellitus

The islet β cells are the specific targets in an autoimmune process that eventually leads to the clinical onset of type 1 diabetes (T1D). The etiology is related to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR-DQ genetic factors that are necessary but not sufficient for disease development. The environmental etiology is related to enterovirus infection in early childhood resulting in two endotypes. In HLA DR4

Comprehensive Cancer Care in the Nordic Countries; strengths, opportunities and improvement profiles

BACKGROUND: Accreditation of cancer centres aims to deliver high-quality, person-centered care and underscores the integration with education, research, and innovation. Over the past decade, cancer centres in the Nordic countries have engaged in accreditation processes through the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI).OBJECTIVE: This study provides an overview of a rapidly evolving lan

Forensic life-threat assessments using trauma scoring in single stabs to the trunk

IntroductionForensic assessments of whether an injury would have been life-threatening often rely on empirical knowledge rather than evidence-based criteria. To address this gap, we applied the validated trauma scoring system New Injury Severity Score (NISS) to estimate mortality risk along the natural course of single stab injuries to the trunk. Methods and materialsWe included 408 survivors and 1

Fall risk screening in older persons using a wearable sensor in free-living conditions – A pilot and feasibility study

Introduction: Wearable sensors measuring bodily movements used in free-living conditions may help predict falls in older persons. Assessing their use in this context is essential to identify potential challenges related to fall risk screening. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a prospective study comparing self-rated and wearable sensor-based measures for the asse

Wild-Type Scandinavian Planarian-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Accelerate Skin Wound Healing in Burn and Mechanical Injuries

Skin wounds remain a clinical challenge, especially for burns and chronic wounds, and existing therapies seldom re-engage the rapid, scar-sparing repair programs observed in nature. Planarians are super-regenerators capable of rebuilding the entire organism from small fragments, and their extracellular vesicles might encode potent prorepair cues. But whether planarian-derived extracellular vesicle

Gender Transculturation : Navigating Market-Mediated Contesting Gender Ideologies in Consumer Acculturation

In this book, I advance the concept of gender transculturation to illustrate how migrant consumers navigate contesting gender ideologies in their host cultural marketplace. Taking a consumer cultural theoretical perspective, the study lies in the nexus of and unpacks an alternative understanding in the current research frontier of consumer acculturation, gender and ideologies. Acculturation of imm

Liver-derived metabolites as signaling molecules in fatty liver disease

Excessive fat accumulation in the liver has become a major health threat worldwide. Unresolved fat deposition in the liver can go undetected until it develops into fatty liver disease, followed by steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually hepatocellular carcinoma. Lipid deposition in the liver is governed by complex communication, primarily between metabolic organs. This can be mediated

Social interaction in local public squares after dark

This paper explores social interaction in local public squares under different lighting conditions. At its best public squares are social spaces that engender a sense of belonging, increase the quality of life and wellbeing of individuals. It is proposed that outdoor lighting would be essential to the use of the public realm after dark, but empirical results regarding lighting conditions and socia
