Antigen presenting cells in autoimmune diabetes: phenotype, function and modulation by Linomide

The aim of this thesis was to better understand the role of antigen presenting cells (APC) in the development of diabetes in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse. We have shown that DC and Mphi that infiltrate the islets of Langerhans produce tumour necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), a cytokine known to contribute to the pathogenesis in the early stages of diabetes development. TNF-a is produced from the ear

Colonial imprints and the power of language in organizational members talk

The aim of the paper is to discuss, with a broadly postcolonial sensibility, the complex role that language has come to play in the contemporary process of globalization. It attempts to show that language, besides being a medium of communication, has come to play a crucial role in companies’ conquest of the global market, on the one hand, and in defending a general idea of an imaginary homogenous

Dysfunction between policy and industry

There are many market and organisational barriers to the breakthrough of a new industrial field such as bioenergy. For many observers, recent high prices of oil and the significant policy support measures throughout Europe, would appear to have created economic conditions that should be sufficient for the industry to prosper. However, a significant number of policies supposed to expand bioenergy (

Students' communicative behaviour in a foreign language classroom

The purpose of this paper is to give a description of the communicativity in a foreign language classroom and also of students’ communicative behaviour. Since the beginning of the 80s communication has been widely discussed as one of the main features in instructed language learning. The focus on form, that traditionally has been dominant in the language classroom, was combined or even replaced by

A General Method for Defining and Structuring Buffer Management Problems

In an industrial plant, availability is an important factor since increased availability often gives an increase of final production, which in many cases means an increased profit for the company. The purpose of using buffer tanks is to increase the availability either by separating production units from each other or by minimizing flow variations. However, the methods for achieving this goal is n

Ventricular Depolarization in Ischemic Heart Disease.Value of Electrocardiography in Assessment of Severity and Extent of Acute Myocardial Ischemia.

Background In patients with symptoms compatible with acute myocardial infarction (MI), early triage by ECG in the pre-hospital phase by ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) criteria is important for direct transport of these patients to a regional center for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). The time from first medical contact to pPCI should, due to present guideline

Collective Trust Behavior

This paper investigates trust behavior in situations where decision-makers are large groups and the decision mechanism is collective. Theories from behavioral economics and psychology suggest that trust in such situations may differ from interindividual trust. The experimental results here reveal a large difference in trust but not in trustworthiness between the individual and collective setting.

A Lutheran in the Holy Land: Michael Eneman´s Journey, 1711-12

The collection examines the view of the holiness in the "Holy Land" through the writings of pilgrims, travelers, and missionaries. The period extends from 1517, the Ottoman conquest of Syria and Palestine, to the Franco-British treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and the consolidation of European hegemony over the Mediterranean. The writers in the collection include Christians (Orthodox, Protestant, and Cat

Glaucoma Diagnostics

This thesis addresses several aspects of glaucoma diagnostics from both a clinical and a screening perspective. New instruments for diagnosing glaucoma have been developed over the past years, but little information is available regarding their performance as screening methods and their usefulness in ordinary clinical practice. Purpose of the research underlying this thesis The objectives of the

Social Construction of Technical Aids - Personal Meaning and Interactional Effects of Disability and Assistive Devices in Everyday Life

This thesis concerns the role of disability and assistive devices in everyday life among persons with, for instance, impairments related to mobility (e.g. wheelchair users) and bodily shape and configuration (e.g. dysmelia). Assistive devices are seen as both includators (assisting participation and emancipation) and excludators (limiting participation, restraining empowerment, and stigmatizing).

Left branch extraction of nominal modifiers in old Scandinavian

Old Scandinavian differs from modern Scandinavian in allowing Left Branch Extractions of nominal modifiers. In this paper I argue that this difference is related to a difference in noun phrase structure between old Scandinavian and modern Scandinavian: old Scandinavian is a language where modifiers like adjectives, quanti-fiers and numerals are adjoined to NP, whereas in modern Scandinavian such m
