DNA Analysis of PCR-Inhibitory Forensic Samples

DNA evidence, linking perpetrators to crime scenes, is central to many legal proceedings. However, crime scene samples often contain extraneous substances that may interfere with the PCR-based forensic analysis, resulting in partial or negative DNA profiles. Extensive DNA purification may remove inhibitors, but involves the risk of DNA loss. In this work, pre-PCR processing was applied to improve

Accelerator physics studies of the MAX-lab storage rings

Within research, synchrotron radiation is a highly useful probe for the study of materials, their properties and structures. Currently, no other radiation source allows the combination of high intensity and short wavelengths. The 3rd generation light sources currently in use for the production of synchrotron radiation are however considerable investments: for already existing facilities this makes

Population genomics of the Viking world

The maritime expansion of Scandinavian populations during the Viking Age (about ad 750–1050) was a far-flung transformation in world history1,2. Here we sequenced the genomes of 442 humans from archaeological sites across Europe and Greenland (to a median depth of about 1×) to understand the global influence of this expansion. GPs’ experience with diagnosis and treatment guidelines for lower UTI in men: a qualitative interview

Background: The incidence of lower urinary tract infection (LUTI) in men visiting primary health care (PHC) is low. Hence, GPs do not diagnose and treat men with LUTI very often. Previous studies have shown that adherence to treatment guidelines regarding LUTI in men is low. There is limited knowledge concerning why guidelines are not adhered to.Aim: To gain knowledge on GPs’ experiences and conceBackground: The incidence of lower urinary tract infection (LUTI) in men visiting primary healthcare (PHC) is low. Ministry of imagination

Memories of the transition Memories of the transition is fictive. However, it is knowledge-based speculation. Much of the story is inspired by existing proposals, emerging innovations, or research on the transformations needed to meet our climate targets. We have collected some of these imaginative seeds below so that you can understand and construct your own vision of a post-fossil society. Conte

Functional Proteome analysis of the molecular mechanism of (myo)fibroblast differentiation

Tissue remodeling is observed in several physiological conditions such as embryogenesis, senescence, wound healing and pregnancy, as well as in several pathological conditions such as fibrosis and tumorgenesis. Fibroblasts play a key role in this tissue remodeling due to their capability of altering the turnover of the extracellular matrix. During the remodeling process, the fibroblasts are believ

Phase separation, aggregation and gelation of a charged helixforming polysaccharide in aqueous salt solution

The phase behaviour and gelation of the anionic polysaccharide kappa-carrageenan (KC) in different salt solutions was studied. The specific site binding of certain anions and certain cations to the KC helix was used as a means of controlling the interactions. In the presence of a binding anion (I-) the charge density of the helix increases and the aggregation of helices, and thereby the gelation,

Cultural Discord in a Medical Context: A Challenge for Physicians

Physician and patient do not meet as equals in the consultation. It is the responsibility of the physician to actively work for better communication in order to provide equitable health care for all individuals. Immigrant patients are a vulnerable group, shown in studies all over the world to have less access to care, fewer opportunities for health, and poorer health compared to majority populatio

Motivational differences in for-profit and non-profit organizations

The purpose of this thesis is to compare motivational differences and similarities between non-profit and for-profit organizational employees. Additionally, our purpose is to compare self-perceived and assigned motivation in employees to find potential discrepancies. Finally, to compare working motivation between employees working in Luxembourg and Sweden. In order to reach the purpose, a qualitat
