Immunoglobulin subclass profiles of anti-idiotypic antibodies to GAD65Ab differ between type 1 diabetes patients and healthy individuals.
Previously we reported the presence of anti-idiotypic antibodies (anti-Id) specific to autoantibodies against GAD65 (GAD65Ab) in healthy individuals while the activity of anti-Id directed to GAD65Ab in T1D patients was significantly lower. These anti-Id recognize the antigen binding site of GAD65Ab, thus preventing their binding to GAD65. Here we characterized the IgG subclass profile of these ant

New Method for Calculating the One-Particle Green's Function with Application to the Electron-Gas Problem
A set of successively more accurate self-consistent equations for the one-electron Green's function have been derived. They correspond to an expansion in a screened potential rather than the bare Coulomb potential. The first equation is adequate for many purposes. Each equation follows from the demand that a corresponding expression for the total energy be stationary with respect to variations in
The effect of low molecular weight heparin (dalteparin) on duration and initiation of labour.
It has recently been reported that women treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) during pregnancy had 3 h shorter duration of delivery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether LMWH (dalteparin) affects labour. From January 1996 to December 2005, 217 consecutive pregnancies, out of 34 216 newborn (prevalence 0.6%) that were given thromboprophylaxis with dalteparin (usually 5,0
Lectin typing of Campylobacter jejuni using a novel quartz crystal microbalance technique.
Seven Campylobacter jejuni strains were characterised by a lectin typing assay. The typing system was based on a quartz crystal microbalance technique (QCM) with four commercially available lectins (wheat germ agglutinin, Maackia amurensis lectin, Lens culinaris agglutinin, and Concanavalin A), which were chosen for their differing carbohydrate specificities. Initially, the gold surfaces of the qu
The FERRUM project: experimental lifetimes of highly excited FeII 3d(6)4p levels and transition probabilities
We report on measurements of radiative lifetimes in singly ionized iron of six 3d(6)4p levels between 61 512 and 64 041 cm(-1),using time resolved laser-induced fluorescence. Absolute oscillator strengths of 18 Fe II lines in the wavelength range from 2350 to 2800 Angstrom have been obtained by measuring branching fractions for the lines from two Fe II levels with a Fourier-transform spectrometer.
Clinical, Immunological, and Genetic Features of Autoimmune Primary Adrenal Insufficiency: Observations from a Norwegian Registry.
Objective: Primary adrenal insufficiency [Addison's disease (AD)] is rare, and systematic studies are few, mostly conducted on small patient samples. We aimed to determine the clinical, immunological, and genetic features of a national registry-based cohort. Design: Patients with AD identified through a nationwide search of diagnosis registries were invited to participate in a survey of clinical f
Secondhand smoke exposure induces Raf/ERK/MAPK-mediated upregulation of cerebrovascular endothelin ETA receptors.
BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking enhances the risk of stroke. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. The present study established an in vivo rat secondhand cigarette smoking (SHS) model and examined the hypothesis that SHS upregulates endothelin receptors with increased cerebrovascular contraction via the Raf/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/mitogen-activated pr
Joint owned companies as instrument of Local Government: Comparative evidence from the Swedish and Italian water sector
The combination of features from the public and private sectors in jointly owned companies imposes challenges to the governance and control mechanisms of these organisations, which have been criticised for lacking accountability. Where there is fragmented ownership, the interests of different owners need to be coordinated. The aim of this article is to consider how such companies can be governed i

The home is the hub of health in very old age: Findings from the ENABLE-AGE Project.
The aim was to explore health in relation to the home as experienced by very old, single-living Swedish people. Applying a grounded theory approach, 40 men and women aged 80-89 were interviewed in their own homes. Data analysis revealed the main theme, "The home is the hub of health", comprising two categories, "The home as support for health", and "Having an inner driving force to maintain health
Energy security matters in the EU Energy Roadmap
Energy security has gained increasing prominence on the EU political agenda, but is often framed narrowly, in terms of import dependency or security of supply. In this paper we screen and scope out a more comprehensive suite of energy security aspects to be considered when assessing low-carbon energy scenarios and apply it using the EU Energy Roadmap as an example. Availability and affordability i
Studies of inelastic cross-section in Rb(7S)+Rb(5S) collisions
The cross section sigma = (8+/-4) x 10(-15) cm(2) was determined for the Rb(7S) + Rb(5S) --> Rb(SD)+ Rb(5S) excitation energy transfer process, and the quenching cross section sigma(q) = (2 +/- 1) x 10(-14) cm(2) for the Rb(5D) state in collisions with ground state Rb atoms. Applying rubidium quasimolecular asymptotic potential curves at relatively large internuclear distances, a qualitative inter

Species composition in northern wetlands may influence greenhouse gas fluxes
Global temperature has increased 0.6 degrees C over the last century due to a continuous increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Although the largest sources of greenhouse gases are anthropogenic, wetlands account for 25% of the total emission of the important greenhouse gas methane (CH4) making them the single largest natural source (75%) of this gas to the atmosphere
Identification of core competencies for primary care of allergy patients using a modified Delphi technique.
BACKGROUND: The majority of allergy patients who seek medical advice are seen in primary care. In-service training of professionals in general practice is needed in order to increase knowledge among primary care clinicians about allergy. Therefore it is important to establish a consensus about what primary care professionals should be able to do, and what the public can expect. We sought to identi
Comprehensive evaluation of PCA-based finite element modelling of the human femur
Computed tomography (CT)-based finite element (FE) reconstructions describe shape and density distribution of bones. Both shape and density distribution, however, can vary a lot between individuals. Shape/density indexation (usually achieved by principal component analysis—PCA) can be used to synthesize realistic models, thus overcoming the shortage of CT-based models, and helping e.g. to study fr
