A Tale of Two Clusters: Sharing Resources to Compete
“The death of distance” has become the battle cry of a modern generation of managers, policy makers and scientists who embrace the new globalized economy and its promise of frictionless exchange across the world. While highly influential, this view does not, however, stand unchallenged. Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing interest in the geographical clustering of industry. Well-known

Islands: ecologically unequal exchange and landesque capital
Our purpose in this chapter is to give a brief perspective on islands in global historical-political ecology, focusing on ecologically unequal exchange and the formation of landesque capital. We emphasize how these processes are intertwined and recursively connected in broader contexts of uneven development. Empirical examples draw on our research into the historical-political ecology of islands a

RCS reduction of integrated antenna arrays and radomes with resistive sheets
In this paper, it is shown that tapered resistive sheets at the edges of the array can be used to transform the scattering properties of the antenna or the radome to that of a metallic plate and hence reduce the radar cross section. Numerical examples of a bandpass FSS radome are presented to illustrate the results. The RCS reduction is very good for TE polarization but not as efficient for the TM
Internationalization of production in Kazakhstan and its economic implications: the role of foreign investment and transnational corporations
This licentiate thesis examines the development of internationalization of production in Kazakhstan and its economic implications over the period 1991-2010. The main objectives of the thesis are to investigate the role of foreign investment and TNCs in the economic growth of Kazakhstan since its independence in 1991 and onward, to explore the motives that foreign enterprises have for investing in
Personal Aerosol Sampler with Size Fractionation and Time Resolution
This chapter describes a personal aerosol sampler with size fractionation and time resolution that gives samples for elemental analysis. An impaction stage collects coarse particles and a filtration stage collects finer ones. Sampling in consecutive time intervals is performed on different impaction and filtration surfaces. These sampling surfaces corresponding, for example, to 15-min intervals, m
A novel soft-input soft-output reduced complexity MIMO trellis detector
In this paper we propose a novel trellis based soft-input soft-output MIMO detector with significantly reduced search space. The performance of the detector is measured by evaluating the ultimate communication rate that is achievable for a system employing the novel detector; this limit corresponds to a mutual information that can be determined by standard methods. We also derive an expression tha

Cooling and dopamine
Oavsiktlig nedkThere is little knowledge about the circulatory effects of dopamine in hypothermia. Induced hypothermia has been shown to improve outcome in various settings. Hypothermia is also used for preservation of organs that are harvested for transplantation. We evaluated lungs that were topically cooled for 6 hours in non-heart-beating donor pigs by transplanting them into recipient pigs and observing the
