Towards an embedded real-time Java virtual machine
Most computers today are embedded, i.e. they are built into some products or system that is not perceived as a computer. It is highly desirable to use modern safe object-oriented software techniques for a rapid development of reliable systems. However, languages and run-time platforms for embedded systems have not kept up with the front line of language development. Reasons include complex and, in
Bienzyme biosensors for glucose, ethanol and putrescine built on oxidase and sweet potato peroxidase
Amperometric biosensors for glucose, ethanol, and biogenic amines (putrescine) were constructed using oxidase/peroxidase bienzyme systems. The H2O2 produced by the oxidase in reaction with its substrate is converted into a measurable signal via a novel peroxidase purified from sweet potato peels. All developed biosensors are based on redox hydrogels formed of oxidases (glucos

Naturläkemedel och hormonpreparat potentiell risk för bröstcancerpatienter. Studie kartlägger bruk av medel som kanske motverkar behandlingen
We have studied the use of complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) among 233 consecutive breast cancer patients operated on at the Lund University Hospital, Sweden between 2002 and 2004. Questionnaires were administered preoperatively (n = 233), and again 3-6 months post-operatively (n = 167) and one year after surgery (n = 88).

Evaluation of common variants in the six known maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) genes for association with type 2 diabetes
An important question in human genetics is the extent to which genes causing monogenic forms of disease harbor common variants that may contribute to the more typical form of that disease. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the extent to which common variation irk the six known maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) genes, which cause a monogenic form of type 2 diabetes, is associated with
Att våga flyga: Ett deltagarorienterat projekt om samtalets potential och förskolepersonals konstruktion av det professionella subjektet.
Popular Abstract in Swedish Denna avhandling tillhör området professions- och skolutvecklingsforskning. Avhandlingen tar upp hur förskolepersonal konstruerar sig som professionella subjekt, dvs hur förskolepersonal skapar sitt professionella jag, sin identitet, utifrån individuella såväl som kollektiva erfarenheter. Avhandlingen tar också upp på vilket sätt reflekterande samtal bidrar till denna sA major aim initially was to create a forum for reflective dialogue on the preschool professions and how it is experienced on a daily basis, so as to be able to investigate how members of the preschool staff construct their professional subject. The following are major questions that were posed: How do preschool staff members talk about themselves, their profession and their work? In what way does
Acanthamoeba keratitis in the south of Sweden
Eight patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis were diagnosed and treated at our clinic between February 1991 and February 1993. Five of these were contact lens wearers, two had suffered recent corneal trauma and one had recently undergone penetrating keratoplasty. The diagnoses were based on both culture and histological examination of biopsy material in three cases, on culture alone in two cases and

Solitary waves for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation
We establish the existence of solitary wave solutions with exponential decay at infinity for a nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation. As a by-product, the existence of smooth solitary waves for the Camassa-Holm equation, modeling water waves and waves in elastic rods, is obtained.
Monocyte-macrophage system as a target for estrogen and selective estrogen receptor modulators.
Postmenopausal decline of estrogen production is associated with development of several degenerative disorders such as osteoporosis, neuroinflammatory diseases and vascular wall degeneration. These are associated with the activation of the cells of the monocyte-macrophage system in a context-dependent manner. Estrogen regulates differentiation, maturation and function of many cell types in this sy
New bioactive sesquiterpenes from Ripartites metrodii and R. tricholoma.
The metabolites of two different Ripartites species, R. tricholoma (A. & S. ex Fr.) Karst. and R. metrodii Huijsm. were investigated. Three new sesquiterpenes were isolated from three different strains. In addition, the strains produced 13-oxo-9(Z),11(E)-octadecadienoic acid, psathyrellon A, 5-desoxyilludosin, an illudane (previously isolated from a Bovista sp.) 96042 and demethylovalicin, fiv
Early enteral supply of lactobacillus and fiber versus selective bowel decontamination: A controlled trial in liver transplant recipients
Background. Early enteral nutrition with solutions containing prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics (Lactobacillus) is suggested to reduce bacterial translocation and minimize the incidence of infections after liver transplantation. Methods. In a prospective, randomized placebo-controlled trial consisting of 95 patients, we compared the incidence of postoperative infections and other complications aft
Older people's use of powered wheelchairs for activity and participation
Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate outcomes of older people's use of powered wheelchairs and risk factors for negative outcomes. Design: The study was a cross-sectional interview-study including 111 powered wheelchair users over 65 years of age. Results: All participants used their powered wheelchair in the summer; nearly all users regarded it as important and found that it gave
Palaeomagnetic configuration of continents during the Proterozoic
Palaeomagnetic data are used to study the configurations of continents during the Proterozoic. Applying stringent reliability criteria, the positions of the continents at 12 times in the 2.45- to 1.00-Ga period have been constructed. The continents lie predominantly in low to intermediate latitudes. The sedimentological indicators of palaeoclimate are generally consistent with the palaeomagnetic l
Search for single top production via FCNC at LEP at root s=189-208 GeV
A search for single top production (e(+)e(-) --> t (c) over bar) via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) was performed using the data taken by the DELPHI detector at LEP2. The data analyzed have been accumulated at center-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 208 GeV. Limits at 95% confidence level were obtained on the anomalous coupling parameters kappa(gamma) and kappa(Z). (C) 2004 Published
Effects of calcium deficiency and calcium supplementation on gastrectomy-induced osteopenia in the young male rat
Background: Surgical removal of the stomach (gastrectomy, Gx) induces osteopenia. In this study we compared the osteopenic effect of Gx with that induced by calcium (Ca) deficiency. Methods: Young male rats were subjected to Gx and/or low Ca diet (-Ca). A group of Gx rats received standard diet + oral Ca supplementation (+ Ca). The rats were killed at various times after the operation/start of tre
