Course
Course 7.5 credits • FONM21
Discover how human speech works across the globe. This course explores the sounds of the world’s languages—how they’re made, how they vary and what they reveal about human communication.
This course introduces you to the wide range of speech sounds used in languages around the world. You’ll learn about the building blocks of spoken language called phonemes – and how they differ across regions and languages.
You’ll explore topics like:
• how speech sounds are produced
• what sounds are common or rare across languages
• how accents and dialects shape the way people speak.
You’ll also get hands-on experience with unusual or “exotic” sounds and learn how to describe them using real-world examples.
