Stress-related peptides in suicide attempters

A suicide attempt is the best known predictor of completed suicide. It has long been assumed that most suicide attempts are the results of stress. The aim of this thesis was to examine some stress related peptides and their relations to the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, diagnoses and temperament in a heterogeneous group of suicide attempters shortly after a suicide attempt and at foll

Hormone-sensitive lipase: Molecular analyses of the human gene; structural and evolutionary aspects on expression, alternative splicing and cold adaptation

Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) is a key enzyme in adipose tissue that hydrolyses stored fat (triacylglycerol). The activity of HSL is under strict hormonal and neural control. Lipolytic agents, such as catecholamines, increase the cAMP levels, resulting in an activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which in turn phosphorylates and activates HSL. This thesis describes the structural orga

Tissue kallikrein: pathophysiological role in acute pancreatitis

Tissue kallikrein releases pharmacollogically highly active kinins from kininogen. Many other enzymes may also release kinins. The aim of the study was to clarify the pathophysiological role of tissue kallikrein in acute pancreatitis. Two sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays for porcine and human tissue kallikrein were developed. A large release of tissue kallikrein from the pancreatic gland

Optimization of Low-Level Controllers and High-Level Polymer Grade Changes

Two design problems at different levels in the control hierarchy are considered; optimization of robust low-level controllers with constrained control signal activity and optimization of economical high-level polyethylene grade changes. As for the first design problem, a constraint on control signal activity due to measurement noise is presented and used when optimizing and comparing PI/PID contr

Clinical Aspects on Chimney Stent Graft Technique in Endovascular Repair of the Aorta.

Introduction: Open repair of the aorta carries a high risk for morbidity and mortality especially in the elderly population and in patients unfit for major surgery. Endovascular aortic repair is safe, durable and effective when there is adequate proximal and distal sealing zone for the aortic stent graft. Fenestrated and branched stent grafts have made the repair possible for complex but elective

Effects of created habitats on farmland biodiversity

Agricultural intensification has caused severe declines among biodiversity in European farmland over the last half century. The transformation of the agricultural landscape has led to reduced availability of key resources such as food, nesting habitat and shelter. In this thesis I have investigated a way of ameliorating the negative effects of agricultural intensification, through the creation of

Prediction of disease progression in early rheumatoid arthritis. A study of some imaging and laboratory variables.

Objective: To investigate the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) and antibodies to citrullinated proteins (anti-CCP) in predicting radiologic outcome in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Patients: All patients were included in the BARFOT programme (baseline). The patients had rheumatoid arthritis of recent onset with mean disease duratio

IMPROVED SAFETY AND QUALITY OF CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH A HIP FRACTURE Intervention Audited by the National Quality Register RIKSHÖFT

Aim: Hip fractures are common and costly. The overall aim of this thesis was to explore how different clinical pathways influence safety and quality of care among patients with a hip fracture and to test the usefulness of the national quality register RIKSHÖFT as a working tool. The aim in paper I was to improve the outcome of patients with a hip fracture through optimized preoperative pain relief

Hirschsprung´s Disease & Gastroesophageal Reflux. Aspects on Two Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders in Childhood

Gastrointestinal motility disorders are common in childhood and in this thesis we look at two of them, i.e. Hirschsprung´s Disease (HD) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in five different studies. HD is a congenital disease characterized by an abscence of ganglion cells in myenteric and submucous ganglia, most commonly in the distal part of the large bowel. In Paper I, we have studied th

Community and food web assembly on virgin habitat islands - The nunatak saga

Þau verða að komast á staðinn og þegar þangað erThe classical view of primary community assembly is that colonisation by plants is essential before invertebrates can establish. It has been recognised, however, that invertebrates can establish before plants, and that they may be important in the first steps of community assembly. Plant succession is well studied but assembly of invertebrates and how their dispersal abilities affect the community
