Ecosystem phenology plays an important role in carbon exchange processes and can be derived from continuous records of carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange data. In this study we examined the potential use of phenological indices for characterizing cumulative annual CO2 exchange in four contrasting northern peatland ecosystems. We used the approach of Jonsson and Eklundh (2004) to derive a set of phenolo

The vegetation component in climate models has advanced since the late 1960s from a uniform prescription of surface parameters to plant functional types (PFTs) PFTs are used in global land-surface models to provide parameter values for every model grid cell With a simple photosynthesis model we derive parameters for all site years within the Fluxnet eddy covariance data set We compare the model pa

Rotational singularities inherent to three different geometric controllers on SE (3) are studied. A new singularity-free method of incrementally generating a reference rotation is proposed, removing a class of singularities without affecting proven stability properties of the closed-loop systems. If satisfying a bound on attitude rate and maximum loop rate in the reference generation, the proposed

This paper presents a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) phase-locked loop (PLL), with an output frequency centered at 54.65 GHz. It demonstrates a mode-switching architecture that considerably improves the lock time, by seamlessly switching between a low-noise mode and a fast-locking mode that is only used during settling. The improvement is used to counteract the increased lock-time caused by cycle-slipsThis paper presents a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) phase-locked loop (PLL), with an output frequency centered at 54.65 GHz. In this paper we present a novel, fast and accurate system for detecting the presence of cars in parking lots. The system is based on fast integral channel features and machine learning. The methods are well suited for running embedded on low performance platforms. The methods are tested on a database of nearly 700,000 images of parking spaces, where 48.5% are occupied and the rest are free. The e

The Horizon 2020 project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma accele

We consider a class of large scale linear-quadratic coordination problems where the information exchange is subject to a time-delay. We show that several previously known properties of the optimal solution to the delay-free problem extend to this case. In particular, the optimal control law comprises a diagonal (decentralized) term complemented by a rank-one coordination term, which can be impleme

Safety regulations for students

The purpose of the safety regulations is to minimise the risks resulting in ill health and accidents associated with laboratory and fieldwork. General work regulationsAt the course introduction, you will get information regarding:House-specific safety rulesEmergency exitsEvacuation routesEmergency showersFor all course components involving lab- or field-work , a risk assessment has to be done in a

Ferrochelatase is the terminal enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway. It catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX to produce protoheme IX. The crystal structures of ferrochelatase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in free form, in complex with Co(II), a substrate metal ion, and in complex with two inhibitors, Cd(II) and Hg(I), are presented in this work. The enzyme is a homodim

Detta görs bland annat genom att öka mängden dataIn this thesis different aspects of baseband implementation of mobile communication systems is treated. The content is focused on symbol detection and channel estimation in MIMO and OFDM. The thesis deals with the complete chain from algorithm to silicon implementation within these areas. The main contribution of this thesis is described in the included papers. The first paper handles symbol dete

We are interested in rationalizing the phenomenon of like-charge attraction between charged bodies, such as a pair of colloids, in the strong coupling regime. The two colloids are modelled as uniformly charged parallel plates, neutralized by mobile counterions. In an earlier work [Palaia et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 126, 3143 (2022)1520-610610.1021/acs.jpcb.2c00028], we developed an effective-field th

Particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) is an enzyme that converts methane into methanol at ambient temperature and pressure. Over the past three decades, the metal content and location of the active site have been highly controversial. Recent single-particle cryogenic electron-microscopy (cryo-EM) structures have furthered this debate. In this study, three cryo-EM structures (PDB entries 7s4h, 7

Lignin is one of the world's most abundant organic polymers, and 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylate lactonase (LigI) catalyzes the hydrolysis of 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylate (PDC) in the degradation of lignin. The pH has profound effects on enzyme catalysis and therefore we studied this in the context of LigI. We found that changes of the pH mostly affects surface residues, while the residues at the active

Electrochemical real-time monitoring of ligand binding to an engineered opioid receptor specific for morphine is reported. In the particular systems studied, 90% of the binding was found to be completed after only 85-120 s. Thus, the binding kinetics has proven to be more rapid than previously believed. The observed association rate constant for the morphine binding reaction was calculated to be 2
