Trichloroethylene: Effects on body and organ weights in mice, rats and gerbils
The influence of continuous inhalation of 150 ppm trichloroethylene (TCE) on body, liver, spleen, and kidney weights in rats, mice, and mongolian gerbils was tested. An age dependent decrease in body weight gain was observed in female rats exposed to TCE. All 3 spcies showed liver enlargement caused by the exposure. The effect was much more pronounced in mice, in which the increase was 60–80%, th
Protection against myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury by PPAR-alpha activation is related to production of nitric oxide and endothelin-1
Background Ligands of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha) have been shown to reduce ischaemia/reperfusion injury. The mechanisms behind this effect are not well known. We hypothesized that activation of PPAR-alpha exerts cardioprotection via a mechanism related to nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1). Methods Five groups of anaesthetized open-chest Sprague-Dawley rat

MR imaging of the pancreas at 0.3 T using a super-paramagnetic oral contrast medium
Twenty patients with carcinoma of the pancreas identified with ultrasonography and/or CT and confirmed by histology, were examined with MR before and after administration of an oral super-paramagnetic contrast medium. Ten patients were examined after administration of the contrast medium through a duodenal tube. Ten patients drank the contrast medium mixed with a viscosity-increasing agent. Organ
A Simple Approximation of the Error Function
Weight-change as a prognostic marker in 12 550 patients following acute myocardial infarction or with stable coronary artery disease.
Aims To examine the prognostic importance of weight-change in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), especially following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods and results In 4360 AMI patients (OPTIMAAL trial) without baseline oedema, we assessed 3-month weight-change, baseline body mass index (BMI), demographics, patient history, medication, physical examination, and biochemical analys
Adaptive Tracking of Non-linear Dynamic Plants, Using the U-model
Adaptive tracking of non-linear dynamic plants is currently an important area of research. The main difficulty being felt by the research community is the lack of a general modelling framework that can facilitate synthesis of a simplistic control law while being capable of providing accurate approximation of non-linear systems. In this study a novel technique based on the control-oriented U-model
High intake of selenium, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, C, and E reduces growth of Helicobacter pylori in the guinea pig
PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori is a human gastroduodenal pathogen associated with type-B gastritis and gastric cancer. Low gastric tissue antioxidant levels are believed to increase the risk of developing gastric cancer. We investigated whether dietary antioxidant levels protect against infection and type-B gastritis in H. pylori-infected guinea pigs. METHODS: Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs infected for
Approximation numbers = singular values
This paper introduces a generalisation of the notion of singular value for Hilbert space operators to more general Banach spaces. It is shown that for a simple integral operator of Hardy type the singular values are the eigenvalues of a non-linear Sturm-Liouville equation and coincide with the approximation numbers of the operator. Finally, asymptotic formulas for the singular numbers are deduced.
S100B and cardiac surgery: Possibilities and limitations
Serum determinations of the glial protein S100B has been found to correlate with brain damage after cardiac surgery. Forty-eight hours and later after surgery, increased S100B levels correlates with the presence of brain infarction, and the extent of infracted brain tissue. S100B at this time-point has been shown to predict long-term outcome, higher S100B levels correlated with decreased survival.
Cytogenetic and molecular genetic analyses of endometrial stromal sarcoma: nonrandom involvement of chromosome arms 6p and 7p and confirmation of JAZF1/JJAZ1 gene fusion in t(7;17)
Endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) are rare neoplasms with the capacity both to invade the myometrium locally and to give rise to extrauterine metastases. Cytogenetic abnormalities have been reported in 22 cases of ESS, mostly involving rearrangements of chromosomes 6, 7, and 17. The most characteristic translocation of this tumor type, t(7;17)(p15-p21;q12-q21), was recently shown to generate a JA
Experimental Comparison of Different Methods for Numerical Identification
A method for evaluation of manual work using synchronised video recordings and physiological measurements
Industrial interventions that focus on increased productivity may impair the ergonomics, on a workstation or individual level. This paper presents a method that characterises work time consumption and physical work load of manual work, using video recordings synchronised with physiological measurements of, e.g. muscular activity, and postures. The underlying idea was that it is possible to amalgam

Gloria in a multitude of voices
This article reconstructs a Hebrew version of the Gloria in Luke 1: 14 with its focus on the righteous remnant of Israel and then analyses the early versions in Greek, Latin, Syriac and Coptic. Finally it gives some later interpretations of the canticle in literature, art and music.
Glutathione S-transferase genotype and p53 mutations in adenocarcinoma of the small intestine
Adenocarcinoma of the small intestine (ASI) is a rare disease of unknown aetiology. The glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) enzyme catalyses the detoxification of compounds involved in carcinogenesis of adenocarcinoma of the stomach, colon and lung, including constituents of tobacco smoke. We investigated a possible interaction between the lack of GSTM1 enzyme activity and the carcinogenic compou
Frataxin deficiency in pancreatic islets causes diabetes due to loss of beta cell mass
Diabetes is caused by an absolute (type 1) or relative (type 2) deficiency of insulin-producing beta cells. We have disrupted expression of the mitochondrial protein frataxin selectively in pancreatic beta cells. Mice were born healthy but subsequently developed impaired glucose tolerance progressing to overt diabetes mellitus. These observations were explained by impairment of insulin secretion d
