Receptive field plasticity profoundly alters the cutaneous parallel fiber synaptic input to cerebellar interneurons in vivo
The cutaneous parallel fiber (PF) receptive fields of cerebellar stellate and basket cells in the cerebellar C3 zone in vivo are normally very small but can be dramatically enlarged by climbing fiber (CF)-dependent plasticity. To analyze the effects of this receptive field plasticity, we present for the first time whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from these interneurons during natural and electri
Ways and functions of intermedial relationships between text and tune in hymns
In stanzic songs like hymns for congregational singing, the intimate relationship between the text and the tune that we find in through-composed art songs is rarely achieved. In the tradition of the Lutheran churches the music has mainly been the servant of the text. However, the work of the hymnal committee of the Church of Sweden, which compiled the hymnal of 1986, shows two major criteria for t

Is it possible and desirable to separate between science and pseudo science, between archaeology and pseudo archaeology? And should archaeologists igonore, understand or criticise pseudo archaeology? My experiences from the study of four traditions within the field of “sacred topographies” show, that it is rather difficult or even impossible to separate archaeology from pseudo archaeology. In the
Routine perinatal postmortem radiography in a peripheral pathology laboratory
Routine postmortem radiography was done in 234 consecutive perinatal autopsies. Using ossification centre appearance and length of femoral shafts as variable it was a very useful and dependable method for estimating gestational age and intrauterine growth. In this way important conclusions can be drawn as to the reason for intrauterine growth deviations. Also many, sometimes diagnostic, abnormalit

Individual risk assessment of thrombosis in pregnancy.
Thromboembolic complications during pregnancy are major contributors to maternal death, but there is no reliable way to estimate the absolute risk of thrombosis before the occurrence of a thromboembolic complication. OBJECTIVE: To create a model for individual estimation of thrombosis risk during pregnancy and to determine the distribution of risk estimates in a series of gravidae. METHOD AND PATI
So close but yet so different - a brief report from an excursion in Estonia.
An excursion to Estonian Saaremaa is briefly reported on, where four botanists from department of systematic botany at university of Lund took part, hosted by professor Hans Trass and three colleagues from department of botany and ecology at Tartu state university. The excursions were mainly emphasized on the alvar localities in western Saaremaa and their lichen vegetation, which will be reported

The nanoparticle - protein complex as a biological entity; a complex fluids and surface science challenge for the 21st century
The major aim of our current work is to develop a deep understanding of biological effects of nanoparticles and how these effects are mediated by proteins that are adsorbed on the nanoparticles under different biological circumstances. Due to their small size, nanoparticles have distinct properties compared to the bulk form of the same materials, and these properties are rapidly revolutionizing ma

Design of FFT processor for OFDM-based UWB communication system
The FFT processor is used for OFDM-based UWB wireless communication system. 64/128 points FFT is employed in the processor by using mixed-radix algorithm to meet the requirement of different UWB systems. The FFT processor, using the pipelined parallel structure, the register reusing architecture and the shift-add algorithm, can reach a device utilization of 100% and a 500MS/s throughput rate(FPGA
Ultrastructural alteration of tape-stripped normal human skin after photodynamic therapy
The effect of photodynamic therapy on tape-stripped normal human skin was explored ultrastructurally. Back skin areas of 3 healthy Caucasian volunteers, 2 men and 1 woman, were tape-stripped 10 consecutive times followed by topical treatment with 5-aminolevulinic acid (20%, w/w) for 4 hours under occlusion (Tegaderm(R)). Then the areas were irradiated for 30 minutes with Waldman PDT 1200 lamp (570
The chaperone-like activity of a small heat shock protein is lost after sulfoxidation of conserved methionines in a surface-exposed amphipathic α-helix
The small heat shock proteins (sHsps) possess a chaperone-like activity which prevents aggregation of other proteins during transient heat or oxidative stress. The sHsps bind, onto their surface, molten globule forms of other proteins, thereby keeping them in a refolding competent state. In Hsp21, a chloroplast-located sHsp in all higher plants, there is a highly conserved region forming an amphip
Simultaneous detection of ethanol, glucose and glycerol in wines using PQQ - dependent dehydrogenase based biosensors
Amperometric biosensors based on corresponding dehydrogenases have been developed for the determination of ethanol, glucose and glycerol. The enzymes have been integrated in redox hydrogels using an Os complex-modified non-conducting polymer employed as the electrochemical mediator and poly(ethyleneglycol)-diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) as the cross-linking agent. The developed biosensors showed a sens
Analysis of methylhexahydrophthalic acid in human urine
A method for analysis of urinary methylhexahydrophthalic acid (MHHP acid), a metabolite of the highly sensitising methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, is described. The method is based on a double liquid-solid extraction of the MHHP acid from urine, esterification with methanol and boron trifluoride catalysis, and analysis with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the electron impact mode. The de
