Ett hjärta av guld: von Trier och Dostojevskij
Genetic predisposition to salt sensitivity and cardiovascular disease
The average amount of salt ingested is about 10 grams daily compared to less than one gram in pre-historic life. Salt, althought somewhat debated, is considered a risk factor for elevated blood pressure and end organ damage beyond the blood pressure effect. Thus, salt contributes to the hypertensive phenotype, increase risk of cardiovasvcular disease, deaths and is a great socioeconomic

Implications of differences in macromolecular composition of stem fractions for processing of Scots pine
Use of wood feedstocks for sugar-based biorefineries requires suitable treatments of the various tree fractions to optimize yields. In the current study, stem wood fractions (sapwood, heartwood and knotwood) were sampled at different heights from well-documented Scots pine trees taken from two contrasting stands. The fractions were assessed in terms of chemical composition, response to SO2-catalys
Genom att studera samhället på en lokal nivå är det möjligt att studera komplexitet och variationer av de aggregerade teorierna kring samhällsförändring, det vill säga studera förändring i eChanges in society are often discussed on an aggregated level and it is argued that society is changing from a modern industrial society to a post-industrial society. Through studying changes on a local level it is possible to study the complexity and variations of the general and aggregated theories of societal changes, and place changes in a context of time and place. The main object of this stu
Geometrical optics, electrostatics, and nanophotonic resonances in absorbing nanowire arrays
Semiconductor nanowire arrays have shown promise for next-generation photovoltaics and photodetection, but enhanced understanding of the light-nanowire interaction is still needed. Here, we study theoretically the absorption of light in an array of vertical InP nanowires by moving continuously, first from the electrostatic limit to the nanophotonic regime and then to the geometrical optics limit.
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy - Mechanisms of Action and Protecting Exposed Blood Vessels in the Wound Bed
Tekniken utvecklades i slutet av 1NPWT has recently been associated with severe complications and bleeding when used in wounds with exposed blood vessels. The aims of this work were to investigate the mechanisms of action of NPWT and to explore the possibility of using thin plastic discs to protect exposed blood vessels in the wound bed during NPWT. Three different kinds of wounds were created in pigs: 6 cm and 10 cm diameter circ

Mental health users' experiences of being interviewed by another user in a research project. A qualitative study
Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how users experience participation in research interviews performed by other users. Method: A varied sample of 17 mental health users with experience of being interviewed in a research project by another user was thematically interviewed in this qualitative study. Data was subject to content analysis. Results: Being interviewed by another user was a specia

In “Thought Experiments and Utilitarianism”, which is a comment on my “Utilitarianism by Way of Preference Change?”, Krzysztof Saja delineates three alternative ways in which one might interpret Richard Hare’s famous thought experiments involving role reversals. He suggests that each of them would underwrite Hare’s claim that moral deliberation transforms an interpersonal conflict of preferences i

A quantitative analysis of hydrogen production efficiency of the extreme thermophile Caldicellulosiruptor owensensis OL
Caldicellulosiruptor owensensis strain OLT (DSM 13100) is an obligately anaerobic, extreme thermophilic bacterium that is capable of utilizing a broad range of carbohydrates and producing H2 as a metabolic by-product. The performance of C. owensensis on glucose and xylose was analyzed in lab-scale bioreactors to assess its potential use in biohydrogen production. Acetate, H2, and CO2 were the main
The nexin-dynein regulatory complex subunit DRC1 is essential for motile cilia function in algae and humans
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterized by dysfunction of respiratory cilia and sperm flagella and random determination of visceral asymmetry. Here, we identify the DRC1 subunit of the nexin-dynein regulatory complex (N-DRC), an axonemal structure critical for the regulation of dynein motors, and show that mutations in the gene encoding DRC1, CCDC164, are involved in PCD pathogenesis. The review of Kristina Fjelkestam’s Det sublimas politik: emancipatorisk estetik i 1800-talets konstnärsromaner [Sublime politics: emancipatory aesthetics in nineteenth-century Künstlerromane] focuses on how the author makes use of the sublime as a means to connect three women writers use of the Künstlerromane in their political, emancipatory projects. On the other hand, the review also deals with

Association of TCF7L2 variation with single islet autoantibody expression in children with type 1 diabetes.
The transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene has the strongest genetic association with type 2 diabetes. TCF7L2 also associates with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, which often presents with a single islet autoantibody, but not with classical type 1 diabetes.
