Although phylogenetically nested within the moths, butterflies have diverged extensively in a number of life history traits. Whereas moths rely greatly on chemical signals, visual advertisement is the hallmark of mate finding in butterflies. In the context of courtship, however, male chemical signals are widespread in both groups although they likely have multiple evolutionary origins. Here, we re

Background: Complement C2 deficiency is the most common genetically determined complete complement deficiency and is associated with a number of diseases. Most prominent are the associations with recurrent serious infections in young children and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in adults. The links with these diseases reflect the important role complement C2 plays in both inn

Many children with adverse reactions to beta-lactams are labelled as allergic without performing an allergy study to confirm it. In this retrospective study of 10 years, we have detected only 3.3% positive cases. Although International Guidelines recommend a second allergy work-up in patients with a negative study, we found from our results a low profitability of retesting.

A theoretical model is presented to describe the chemical mechanism of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) via charge transfer (CT) in the pyridine-Ag-2 complex. We first describe the influence of the interaction between the metal cluster and pyridine to the ground-state properties of the pyridine-Ag-2 complex, such as charge redistribution, the change of the atomic-resolved densit

Climate change is having a discernible effect on many biological and ecological processes. Among observed changes, modifications in bird phenology have been widely documented. However, most studies have interpreted phenological shifts as gradual biological adjustments in response to the alteration of the thermal regime. Here we analysed a long-term dataset (1980-2010) of short-distance migratory r

Vanliga funktionsnedsättningar vid insjuknandet är nedsatt rörelseförmåga i ena kroppshalvan, känselnedsättning, balaPost stroke shoulder pain, PSSP, is a common type of pain after stroke, but still further knowledge of this condition is needed. An increased knowledge of prevalence, contributing factors and impact on the individual’s life could enhance the possibility to find more effective treatments and therefore more studies are needed. The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate PSSP with a special focus

The glucosinolate-myrosinase system found in plants of the Brassicales order is one of the best studied plant chemical defenses. Glucosinolates and their hydrolytic enzymes, myrosinases, are stored in separate compartments in the intact plant tissue. Upon tissue disruption, bioactivation of glucosinolates is initiated, i.e. myrosinases get access to their glucosinolate substrates, and glucosinolat

This paper extends the concept of weak renegotiation-proof equilibrium (WRP) to allow for costly renegotiation and shows that even small renegotiation costs can have dramatic effects on the set of equilibria. More specifically, the paper analyzes the infinitely repeated Bertrand game. It is shown that for every level of renegotiation cost, there exists a discount factor such that any collusive pro

This article studies contemporary Australian copyright and contrasts this to a large-scale online survey on file sharing in order to analyse the seemingly parallel and non-compliant legal and social norms that they represent. Furthermore, a selection of 3,575 Australian respondents to an online survey is compared to a large scale near global group of over 96,000 respondents, allowing determining d

Background: Caldicellulosiruptor species have gained a reputation as being among the best microorganisms to produce hydrogen (H2) due to possession of a combination of appropriate features. However, due to their low volumetric H2 productivities (QH2), Caldicellulosiruptor species cannot be considered for any viable biohydrogen production process yet. In this study, we evaluate biofilm forming pote

Using a novel approach to assess attachment to therapist from patient narratives (Patient Attachment to Therapist Rating Scale; PAT-RS), we investigated the relationships between secure attachment to therapist, patient-rated alliance, and outcome in a sample of 70 young adults treated with psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A series of linear mixed-effects models, controlling for length of therapy and

Abstract in UndeterminedSince the second half of the nineteenth century Scandinavian caves have been studied from various angles, to answer questions about their location, dating, and use. There was intensive archaeological interest in caves in the nineteenth century and at the start of the twentieth century. This has continued without interruption in Norway. There has been much less archaeologica

PURPOSE: Professional electricians are highly subjected to electrical injuries. Previous studies describing symptoms after electrical injury have not included people with less severe initial injuries. The purpose of the present study was to describe symptoms at different time points after electrical injury, the impact of "no-let-go" phenomenon and different electrical potential [high voltage (HV)

A solid phase extraction (SPE) technique has been developed for the quantitative determination of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aqueous samples. The SPE technique involved extraction of PAHs from a 100 mL sample containing 10 % methanol as a modifier onto C-18 cartridges. 40 % methanol in water was used as conditioning solvent, and 3 mL acetone:THF (1:1) as eluting solvent. After eluting, th
