Affinity precipitation is a highly selective bioseparation method, which has been successfully used in the purification of various enzymes/proteins. The separation of (His)6-tagged lactate dehydrogenase ((His)6-LDH) was carried through affinity precipitation technique using thermoresponsive copolymer poly(vinylimidazole-co-N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (poly(VI-NIPAM)). Nearly quantitative recovery of (

We report comprehensive microwave measurements on a T-branch switch; a GaInAs/InP electron waveguide based structure. The study includes a small signal model of the device where limitations of high frequency operation are discussed. An example of large signal operation where the nonlinearity of the device is exploited by operating the T-branch switch as a frequency multiplier is demonstrated.

We investigated intravoxel phase dispersion caused by pulsatile brain motion in diffusion spin-echo pulse sequences. Mathematical models were used to describe the spatial and temporal velocity distributions of human brain motion. The spatial distribution of brain-tissue velocity introduces a phase spread over one voxel, leading to signal loss. This signal loss was estimated theoretically, and effe

We consider an underactuated two-link robot called the inertia wheel pendulum. The system consists of a free planar rotational pendulum and a symmetric disk attached to its end, which is directly controlled by a DC-motor. The goal is to create stable oscillations of the pendulum, which is not directly actuated. We exploit a recently proposed feedback-control design strategy based on motion plannin

In vitro studies of titanium and TiO2 as well as other metals were carried out to investigate the role of these metals in the inflammatory response through the Fenton reaction. The TiOOH matrix formed traps the superoxide radical, so that no or very small amounts of free hydroxyl radicals are produced. Ellipsometry and spin trapping with spectrophotometry and electron spin resonance (ESR) were use

A new hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (H-TDMA) has been constructed at Lund University within the frameworks of the EU FP6 Infrastructure Project EUSAAR (www.eusaar.org). The aim of this coordinated H-TDMA development is to design and evaluate a new generation of H-TDMAs that are capable of conducting long term measurements of the hygroscopic growth and state of mixing of sub-mic

Optical physical properties of neutral and charged quinquethiophene monomer, and neutral and cationic pi-dimeric quinquethiophenes were investigated with density functional theory as well as the two dimensional (2D) site (transition density matrix) and three dimensional (3D) cube (transition density and charge difference density) representations, stimulated by the recent experimental report [T. Sa

Red coloration in multicoloured or polymorphic species has been associated with dominance in a number of case studies, including probability of winning in human sports. However, it is not clear at what stage during ontogeny the association between red and the probability of winning contests occurs (or being perceived as more threatening by a contradistinct rival), for example, at conception, early

SUMMARY: Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the location and quantity of hypoperfusion during sudden complete occlusion of one of the major coronary arteries. Thirty-five patients referred for elective percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty were injected intravenously with 99mTc-sestamibi during balloon inflation. To visualize an

The article presents and discusses Axel Honneth's theory of recognition as a specific constellation, i.e. as a theoretical endeavour spanning over and interrelating positions in the fields of anthropology, social theory, and politics. As essential components in this constellation is discerned an anthropology of recognition, a social philosophy of different forms of recognition, a morality of recog

This review summarizes experimental findings that highlight the role of immune mechanisms in atherosclerosis and the potential atheroprotective effects of active or passive immunization strategies. Immunomodulation therapy appears to be feasible and effective, suggesting that a vaccine for atherosclerosis can be developed for clinical testing. Given the increasing number of patients with atheroscl

Fluorescence lidar is a non-invasive, remote sensing technique that makes it possible to extend the application of the laser-induced fluorescence technique to the outdoor environment where uncontrolled, external conditions must be met. Although initially developed for the investigation of marine environment and vegetation, in the past decade this technique has been successfully applied to the fiel

Application of a biotreatment system utilising immobilised white rot fungi can become an alternative for treating water or effluent contaminated by organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The application of the packed bed and suspended carrier bioreactor systems for the degradation of PAHs in synthetic polluted media using a subtropical white rot fungal isolate DSPM95 w

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of using a technique based on artificial neural networks for quality assurance of image reporting. The networks were used to identify potentially suboptimal or erroneous interpretations of myocardial perfusion scintigrams (MPS). Methods: Reversible perfusion defects (ischaemia) in each of five myocardial regions, as interpreted by on

Web sites are exposed to high rates of incoming requests. Since web sites are sensitive to overload, admission control mechanisms are often implemented. The purpose of such a mechanism is to prevent requests from entering the web server during high loads. This paper presents how admission control mechanisms can be designed and implemented with a combination of queueing theory and control theory. S

Chromosome segment 12q13 -> q15 recombines with many different chromosome bands in lipomas and at least ten recurrent translocations have been identified. The HMGA2 gene is often rearranged, but little is known about the molecular consequences at other breakpoints. Fusion genes between HMGA2 (12q14 -> q15) and LPP (3q27 -> q28), LHFP (13q12) and CMKOR1 (2q37) have been reported. In the present stu
