Data Resource Profile: The Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) dataset

The Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) database is a population-based resource of SACT activity reported routinely by National Health Service (NHS) trusts in England. Data are collected on the SACT treatments of adult and paediatric patients, delivered in secondary and tertiary settings with the intention of improving survival, delaying further cancer progression or development and improving dise

Abatacept in rheumatoid arthritis: survival on drug, clinical outcomes, and their predictors—data from a large national quality register

There are limited data regarding efficacy of abatacept treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) outside clinical trials. Quality registers have been useful for observational studies on tumor necrosis factor inhibition in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate clinical efficacy and tolerability of abatacept in RA, using a national register. New publication in BMC Arthritis Resea

Data Resource Profile: National Cancer Registration Dataset in England

The National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS), part of Public Health England (PHE), is the population-based cancer registry for England. It collects, quality assures and analyses data on all people living in England who are diagnosed with malignant and pre-malignant neoplasms, with national coverage since 1971. It produces the national cancer registration dataset for England. The p

Risk of local recurrence of rectal cancer and circumferential resection margin: population‐based cohort study

A circumferential resection margin (CRM) of 1·0 mm or less after rectal cancer surgery is thought to increase the risk of local recurrence (LR). This retrospective population‐based study examined how CRM distance affects the LR risk. New publication in BJS Society

Data Resource Profile: The National Cancer Institute’s Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) was conceived in 1997 during a multidisciplinary conference focused on risk communication with attenders representing the fields of psychology, health behaviour and education, public health, clinical medicine and health journalism. The key recommendation born of this conference encouraged NCI to develop a commu

Covid-19 i trångbodda förorter

Reflection on modern methods: five myths about measurement error in epidemiological research

Epidemiologists are often confronted with datasets to analyse which contain measurement error due to, for instance, mistaken data entries, inaccurate recordings and measurement instrument or procedural errors. If the effect of measurement error is misjudged, the data analyses are hampered and the validity of the study’s inferences may be affected. In this paper, we describe five myths that contrib

Using four different clinical tools as predictors for pain after total hip arthroplasty: a prospective cohort study

Treatment of postoperative pain remains a significant clinical problem, and prediction of patients with a risk of higher postoperative pain levels is an important focus. We aimed to identify patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) with risk of higher pain levels at 24 h postoperatively by using four simple and easily available clinical tools. New publication in BMC Anesthesiology

Consumption of red meat, genetic susceptibility, and risk of LADA and type 2 diabetes

Analyses were based on Swedish case–control data comprising incident cases of LADA (n = 465) and T2D (n = 1528) with matched, population-based controls (n = 1789; n = 1553 in genetic analyses). Multivariable-adjusted ORs in relation to self-reported processed and unprocessed red meat intake were estimated by conditional logistic regression models. Attributable proportion (AP) due to interaction wa

Familial risk of breast cancer by dynamic, accumulative, and static definitions of family history

The authors assessed the effect of incorporating the timing of cancer diagnosis events into the assessment of familial risks of breast cancer in first‐degree and second‐degree relatives in a nationwide cohort study of 5,099,172 women (follow‐up was between 1958‐2015). Family history was assessed using 3 approaches: 1) as a static variable (ever having a relative with breast cancer); 2) as accumula

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment in Diabetes: Patient-reported Outcome after Surgery in National Quality Registries.

Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow (UNE) is overrepresented in patients with diabetes, but the outcome of surgery is unknown. We aimed to evaluate patient-reported outcome in patients with and without diabetes, and to assess potential sex differences and compare surgical treatment methods. Data on patients operated for UNE (2010-2016, n = 1354) from the Swedish National Registry for Hand Surgery

Cancer survival statistics for patients and healthcare professionals – a tutorial of real‐world data analysis

In this review, we explain statistical concepts targeted towards patients, clinicians and healthcare professionals that summarize cancer patient survival under the assumption that other causes of death exist. Specifically, we explain the appropriate use, interpretation and assumptions behind statistical methods for competing risks, loss in life expectancy due to cancer and conditional survival. Re

Avoiding dynastic, assortative mating, and population stratification biases in Mendelian randomization through within-family analyses

Estimates from Mendelian randomization studies of unrelated individuals can be biased due to uncontrolled confounding from familial effects. Here we describe methods for within-family Mendelian randomization analyses and use simulation studies to show that family-based analyses can reduce such biases. Read more here.
