OBJECTIVES: To estimate risks of fatal/nonfatal coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and cardiovascular disease (CVD) with SBP in an observational study of patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Twelve thousand, six hundred and seventy-seven patients aged 30-75 years, treated with antihypertensive drugs, without previous congestive heart failure, followed for 5 years. RESULTS: Risk curves of CHD

BACKGROUND: Men with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are at increased risk of bone loss. The present study sought to determine the incidence of low trauma fracture in men with prostate cancer (PC), and to characterize the association between potential risk factors and fracture risk in these men. METHODS: In the prospective, population-based Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Stu

In this paper a three dimensional FE model of the friction stir welding (FSW) is presented and the FSW process is simulated. The model has been implemented in FE code Abaqus with user subroutines DLOAD, DFLUX and UMASFL. The material data used to describe the welded panels is from an aluminium alloy called AL-2024-T3 and the material is assumed to be isotropic with temperature dependent yield stre

Aim: Acute otitis media (AOM) is a common childhood disease, which often becomes recurrent (rAOM). A small reduction of AOM episodes has been noted in unselected child cohorts after vaccination with heptavalent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7). The purpose of this study was to investigate how vaccination affects young children at risk of developing rAOM. Methods: Ninety-six children with an A

Radiation therapy is a major treatment modality for malignant and benign brain tumors. Concerns of radiation effects on the brain tissue and neurocognitive function and quality of life increase as survival of patients treated for brain tumors improves. In this article, the clinical and neurobehavioral symptoms and signs of radiation-induced brain injury, possible histopathology, and the potential

An upper bound on the average error probability for maximum-likelihood decoding of the ensemble of randomL-branch binary trellis codes of rateR = 1/nis given which separates the effects of the tail lengthTand the memory lengthMof the code. It is shown that the bound is independent of the lengthLof the information Sequence whenM geq T + [nE_{VU}(R)]^{-1} log_{2} L. The implication that the actual e

BACKGROUND: Normal cell division is coordinated by a bipolar mitotic spindle, ensuring symmetrical segregation of chromosomes. Cancer cells, however, occasionally divide into three or more directions. Such multipolar mitoses have been proposed to generate genetic diversity and thereby contribute to clonal evolution. However, this notion has been little validated experimentally. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

It is demonstrated that an accurate approximation of the screening function is crucial for a quantitative evaluation of the XPS asymmetry index α. It is also shown that the dynamical aspects of the valence electron response are important in order to get an accurate description of the XPS spectrum at finite distances from the threshold.(23 refs)
