Infinite Regress: Virtue or Vice?
PALSIMART: A New Framework for Computer Aided Rapid Prototyping of Advanced Control Systems
The benefits of integrating a real-time oriented language for description of control algorithms, PAL, into a package for computer aided control system design, SIMART, are investigated. An anti-wind-up partial state model reference controller, designed and validated in this environment, has been successfully tested in real-time on a double tank system.

Spherical Vector Wave Expansion of Gaussian Electromagnetic Fields for Antenna-Channel Interaction Analysis
In this paper we introduce an approach to analyze the interaction between antennas and the propagation channel. We study both the antennas and the propagation channel by means of the spherical vector wave mode expansion of the electromagnetic field. Then we use the expansion coefficients to study some properties of general antennas in those fields by means of the antenna scattering matrix. The foc
Focused crawling in the ALVIS semantic search engine
The EU project ALVIS - Superpeer Semantic Search Engine, aiming at developing an Open Source prototype of a peer-to-peer, semantic based search engine, is brie°y presented. A focused (or topic speci¯c) crawler, responsible for creating topic-speci¯c databases within ALVIS, is presented in more detail. It is based on a combination of a standard Web crawler and an automated subject classi¯er. The to

Exploiting the Common-Mode Signal in xDSL
Communication over the copper twisted-pair channel is performed by transmitting and receiving differential-mode (DM) signals. In this paper, we extend the conventional DM receive scheme by incorporating the common-mode (CM) signal, which can be extracted at the end of every wire pair. We assess the potential of this idea for digital subscriber line systems (xDSL) in terms of channel capacity using

Private standards - leveling the playing field for global competition in the food supply chain?
Differences in national legislations can affect the international competitiveness of an industry. For example, stringent EU regulations on animal welfare and environmental protection are often said to be a cost disadvantage for EU producers competing on the global market. However, in recent years, powerful retailers and food processors have started to impose requirements on downstream producers th

High-Speed PLIF Imaging for Investigation of Turbulence Effects on Heat Release Rates in HCCI Combustion
High-speed laser diagnostics was utilized for single-cycle resolved studies of the fuel distribution in the combustion chamber of a truck-size HCCI engine. A multi-YAG laser system consisting of four individual Nd:YAG lasers was used for planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) imaging of the fuel distribution. The fundamental beam from the lasers at 1064 nm was frequency quadrupled in order to ob
Neoliberal semiotic cycles and the political economy of educational policy
Drawing upon a discourse analysis of policy approach, it is shown that a 2013 Swedish government policy proposing semiprivatization of universities is not a radical departure from Swedish social democratic values about public institutions, but rather the current iteration of a longer neoliberal semiotic cycle in higher education.
