Product development problematics

The study of life in confined extreme environments to give guidance for issues and conditions for the design, development and production of objects on Earth. We use long term living in confined extreme environments as starting point for studies of product development concerning objects and living environments. By using the extreme environment as a backdrop for our studies we aim to achieve a labor

MHC and Transgenic Mice. A study into polymorphism and function of class I and class II molecules

I Transplantation antigens encoded in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) bind peptides and present them to T cells. We showed that mouse T cells expressing transgenic human CD8 can recognise human MHC class I. Expression on mature T cells is sufficient for activation in a mixed lymphocyte culture but expression both on thymocytes and mature T cells is necessary for peptide specific MHC restr

On information rates for faster than Nyquist signaling

In this paper we consider the information rates of faster than Nyquist (FTN) signaling schemes. We consider binary, quaternary and octal schemes that use root raised cosine pulses. Lower and upper bounds to the information rates are given. The main result is that the lower bounds are often above the information rates for standard Nyquist signaling schemes. This implies that FTN must be superior to

Denitrification as an adaptive trait in soil and groundwater bacteria

The focus of the thesis is on selection and adaptation processes in bacteria with emphasis on denitrifying bacteria in groundwater. Other nitrogen transformation processes such as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate ammonification) and nitrification of forest soil bacteria are briefly discussed. Intensive fertilisation of agricultural soils in southern Sweden have been performed

Experimental Study of Convection Heat Transfer in the Entrance Region of a Rectangular Duct with Transverse Ribs

The paper presents an experimental study on heat transfer coefficients in a straight rectangular channel containing continuous transverse ribs. The ribs were located on one side of the channel which is heated with a uniform heat flux. Three values of the rib pitch-to-height ratio (10, 20 and 30) were considered, with the Reynolds number, based on the channel hydraulic diameter, ranging from 57,000

Investigation of turbulence models applied to premixed combustion using a level-set flamelet library approach

Most of the common modeling approaches to premixed combustion in engineering applications are either based on the assumption of infinitely fast chemistry or the flamelet assumption with simple chemistry. The level-set flamelet library approach (FLA) has shown great potential in predicting major species and heat release, as well as intermediate and minor species, where more simple models often fail

Development of adenoviral vectors for monitoring telomerase activity in living cells

The most commonly used method to measure telomerase activity in cells is the telomerase reverse amplification protocol (TRAP) assay, where the protein extracts derived from homogenized cells are analysed. In this thesis we focused on developing a method where telomerase activity co

In Search of Caravans Lost . Iranian Intellectuals and Nationalist Discourse in the Inter-War Years.

This dissertation examines the characteristics of Iranian nationalist discourse between the World Wars. By looking at texts of intellectuals, men and women, published in three journals (Iranshahr, Name-ye Farangestan, and Ayandeh) in the 1920s this study maps the content of nationalist discourse and to what extent this discourse allows for dissonance. Informed by the work of Reinhart Koselleck (co
