Development of breeding populations of birds in two residential areas in Solothurn and their dependence on habitat structure

From 1991 to 1998 breeding birds were surveyed in two study plots (11.2 and 8.3 ha) of the town of Solothurn, Central Plateau of Switzerland. The paper presents the results and relates habitat structure elements to species diversity On individual properties. Over the whole study period, 31 species were found in each area. Thirteen species were recorded as breeders in all years in both areas. Avera

"Tusen år som en dag": en utläggning av Ps 90

Artikeln innehåller ett försök till ordagrann översättning av psalmen samt en kommentar som är inriktad på att få fram tankesammanhanget i psalmen. En religionshistorisk parallell från Bhagavadgita har också tagits med.

Beneficial effects of low-dose prostacyclin on cat intestinal perfusion during endotoxemia as evaluated with microdialysis and oxygen transport variables

Objective: To evaluate the effects of low-dose prostacyclin on intestinal perfusion during endotoxemia. Design: A randomized, blinded experimental study. Setting: A university laboratory. Subjects: Sixteen anesthetized cats. Interventions: The animals received endotoxin by continuous intravenous infusion (0.5 mg/kg plus 0.5 mg kg(-1).hr(-1)) and a continuous volume replacement throughout the exper

Chemotherapy in Ewing's sarcoma. The Scandinavian Sarcoma Group experience

During the past 15 years the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group has treated 140 patients with Ewing's sarcoma. Two protocols have been used. SSG IV included 52 patients between 1984 and 1990 and SSG IX, 88 patients since 1990. After 5 years of treatment, local recurrences occurred in 19% of the patients (M0 + M1) in the SSG IV group and 10% in the SSG IX group. Distant metastases developed in 57% of the M

Moisture permeability of mature concrete, cement mortar and cement paste

Moisture permeability tests were performed on specimens of concrete, cement mortar and cement paste with the bottom side in water or in moist air and the upper side in a relative humidity of 33 %. The distribution of the relative humidity within the specimen was measured, at stationary conditions, as well as the amount of water which pass through the specimen. The depth of the specimens was varie

Severe Developmental Language Disorder - Reading And Spelling - A Longitudinal-Study Of 2 Nonidentical Twins

Linguistic awareness i.e. the ability to identify phonemes, to segment words into syllables and to rhyme is highly correlated with reading/spelling proficiency. Children with severe developmental language disorders DLD (syntagmatic type) have been shown to specifically lack linguistic awareness. Two non-identical twin boys with severe, specific DLD were studied longitudinally with respect to their

Catalytic and structural effects of W-substitution in M2 Mo-V-Te-oxide for propene ammoxidation

Substitution of W for the Mo in M2-type Mo-V-Te-oxide was investigated. XRD, FTIR, XANES, and HRTEM verified that the substitution is possible in the whole range up to complete replacement of Mo by W. Catalytic measurements for propene ammoxidation show that both the specific activity and the selectivity to acrylonitrile pass through a maximum with increase of the W-content of the catalyst. XRD an

Absorption of infrared radiation and the radiation transfer mechanism in paper. Part I: Theoretical model

Infrared dryers, both gas fired and electrically healed, have become a widespread technology in the paper industry. This work proposes a model for the absorption of thermal radiation in the thickness direction of a paper sheet. The model is based on the multilayer idealization of a paper sheet proposed by Scallan and Porch. In this model, the optical properties of paper are considered as the resul

Computerized image analysis as a tool to quantify infiltrating leukocytes : a comparison between high- and low-magnification images

The purpose of the present study was to establish a rapid and reproducible method for quantification of tissue-infiltrating leukocytes using computerized image analysis. To achieve this, the staining procedure, the image acquisition, and the image analysis method were optimized. Because of the adaptive features of the human eye, computerized image analysis is more sensitive to variations in staini

The wholeness of a cybernetican

It is our impression that Gordon Pask’s writings cover fundamentals for large parts of the widely expanding fields of Cybernetics and Systems Theory. Thereby, and by his lecturing activities, he has become a unique figure in maintaining a kind of unity of the field of Cybernetics, well in accord with Wiener’s view (“control and communication in the animal and the machine”; cf[26]). And that, with
