Inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins are associated with future weight gain.

Cross-sectional studies have associated obesity and other components of the so-called metabolic syndrome with low-grade inflammation. The temporal and causal relations of this association have not been fully explored. This study explored whether elevated levels of inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins (ISPs) (fibrinogen, orosomucoid, {alpha}1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, and ceruloplasmin) are assoc

Towards Gene Therapy of Osteopetrosis.

Även om de oliThe goal in this thesis is development of gene therapy for malignant infantile osteopetrosis (IMO), a rare but severe genetic bone disease. The concept of osteopetrosis implies dysfunction or lack of osteoclasts, the bone resorbing cells in our body, resulting in failure of normal bone breakdown. Although involved in bone remodeling, osteoclasts are of hematopoietic origin and may potentially be t

Correlation between blood glucose concentration and glucose concentration in subcutaneous adipose tissue evaluated with microdialysis during intensive care

Background: Hyper- as well as hypoglycemia may be detrimental for brain energy metabolism and even a moderate increase in blood glucose concentration can affect outcome adversely. During physiological conditions, glucose concentration obtained from microdialysis of subcutaneous adipose tissue adequately reflects plasma glucose concentration. This study examines whether this correlation is also obt

Low-temperature MOCVD growth of InN buffer layers with indium pre-deposition technology

Cubic-InN was grown at a low temperature of 350 degrees C using our home-made low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The technology of indium pre-deposition was applied, that is, a layer of indium was deposited on the sapphire surface with a precursor of trimethylindium (TMI) before the growth of InN. Both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectra show th

Energy transport, overshoot, and mixing in the atmospheres of M-type main- and pre-main-sequence objects

We constructed hydrodynamical model atmospheres for mid M-type main-,as well as pre-main-sequence (PMS) objects. Despite the complex chemistry encountered in these cool atmospheres a reasonably accurate representation of the radiative transfer is possible, even in the context of time-dependent and three-dimensional models. The models provide detailed information about the morphology of M-type gran

Post-translational processing of Drosophila nucleoside diphosphate kinase.

Nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) was purified from Drosophila melanogaster by a combination of anion-exchange, hydroxyapatite, and reversed-phase chromatography. The identity of the purified enzyme was confirmed by sequencing internal peptides (the N-terminus appeared to be blocked). Post-translational modifications were investigated by using protein chemical and mass spectrometric methods. An

Didecyl squarate — A practical amino-reactive cross-linking reagent for neoglycoconjugate synthesis

The present paper describes the synthesis and use of the hydrophobic squaric decyl ester glycosides in neoglycoconjugate chemistry. The 2-aminoethyl glycosides of agr-D-mannopyranose, lactose, globotriose, globotetraose, GM3, and sialyl Lewisx, as well as the 2-(2-aminoethylthio)ethyl glycoside of agr-D-mannopyranose, beta-D-glucopyranose, and galabiose were reacted with squaric acid didecyl ester

Determination of optical scattering properties of highly-scattering media in optical coherence tomography images

We developed a new algorithm that fits optical coherence tomography (OCT) signals as a function of depth to a general theoretical OCT model which takes into account multiple scattering effects. With use of this algorithm, it was possible to extract both the scattering coefficient and anisotropy factor from a particular region of interest in an OCT image. The extraction algorithm was evaluated agai

Two different dihydroorotate dehydrogenases from yeast Saccharomyces kluyveri

Genes for two structurally and functionally different dihydroorotate dehydrogenases (DHODHs, EC 1.3.99.11), catalyzing the fourth step of pyrimidine biosynthesis, have been previously found in yeast Saccharomyces kluyveri. One is closely related to the Schizosaccharomyces pombe mitochondrial family 2 enzymes, which use quinones as direct and oxygen as the final electron acceptor. The other one res

Phylogenetic evidence for novel and genetically different intestinal spirochetes resembling Brachyspira aalborgi in the mucosa of the human colon as revealed by 16S rDNA analysis

Intestinal spirochetes (Brachyspira spp.) are causative agents of intestinal disorders in animals and humans. Phylogenetic analysis of cloned 16S rRNA genes from biopsies of the intestinal mucosa of the colon from two Swedish 60-years old adults without clinical symptoms revealed the presence of intestinal spirochetes. Seventeen clones from two individuals and 11 reference strains were analyzed an

Mapping potential energy surfaces by core electron excitation: the resonant Auger decay spectrum of BF3

High-resolution electron spectroscopy applied under resonant Auger-Raman conditions is shown to be a powerful tool for characterizing complex potential energy surfaces of core-excited states in polyatomic systems. BF3 is used as a prototype molecule: excitation of the Bls --> 2a(2)(") transition leads to an exceptional out-of-plane vibrational excitation resolved over a wide energy range (3.6 eV).
