Studies of the reactions between indole-2,3-diones (isatins) and 2-aminobenzylamine
Reflux of equimolecular amounts 2-aminobenzylamine and isatins in acetic acid produced indolo[3,2-c]quinolin-6-ones in good yields. A proposed mechanism involving initial formation of a spiro compound is given. This isolable intermediate subsequently rearranges via a sequential isocyanate ring opening and a cyclisation process to a urea derivative which finally cyclized to the indolo[3,2-c]quinoli
Proposal for a distributed computer control system in heavy-duty trucks
In designing safety-critical real-time distributed control-systems a great potential lies in combining methods within the areas of dependable computer systems and control theory. In this report a brake system on a heavy-duty truck is used as a case study to discuss the choice of distribution level of the computer system and the control algorithms. The distrubution levels of these system aspects ar
Effects of Asthma Combination Therapy on Extracellular Matrix Remodeling in Human Lung Fibroblasts
Fibroblasts, being one of the resident and structural cells of the lung, have the capacity to produce inflammatory mediators, cytokines and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins perpetuating the inflammation in the airways of asthmatics. Airway remodeling is also a prominent feature of asthma that affects the lung function causing a thickening of the airways. An increased ECM production of proteogly
Tailbiting codes: Bounds and search results
Tailbiting trellis representations of linear block codes with an arbitrary sectionalization of the time axis are studied. The notations of regular and irregular tailbiting codes are introduced and their maximal state complexities are lower-bounded. The asymptotic behavior of the derived bound is investigated. Furthermore, for regular tailbiting codes the product state complexity is lower-bounded.
Patterns of polyploid evolution in Greek marsh orchids (Dactylorhiza; Orchidaceae) as revealed by allozymes, AFLPs, and plastid DNA data
Polyploidy is common in higher plants, and speciation in polyploid complexes is usually the result of reticulate evolution. We examined variation in nuclear AFLP fingerprints, nuclear isozymes, and hypervariable plastid DNA loci to describe speciation patterns and species relationships in the Dactylorhiza incarnatalmaculata polyploid complex (marsh orchids; Orchidaceae) in Greece. Several endemic

Basiliolides, a class of tetracyclic C19 dilactones from Thapsia garganica, release Ca2+ from the endoplasmic reticulum and regulate the activity of the transcription factors nuclear factor of activated T cells, nuclear factor-kappa B, and activator protein 1 in T lymphocytes
Calcium concentration within the endoplasmic reticulum ER) plays an essential role in cell physiology. We have investigated the effects of basiliolides, a novel class of C19 dilactones isolated from Thapsia garganica, on Ca2+ mobilization in T cells. Basiliolide A1 induced a rapid mobilization of intracellular Ca2+ in the leukemia T-cell line Jurkat. First, a rapid calcium peak was observed and in

The impact of metabolic and blood pressure control on incidence and progression of nephropathy. A 10-year study of 385 type 2 diabetic patients
The aim of the present study was to find clinical parameters affecting incidence and progression of nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. A prospective study for 10 years was performed in 385 type 2 diabetic patients (diabetes diagnosis > or =30 years) attending a hospital-based outpatient clinic. Medical risk indicators like diabetes duration, HbA(1c), and blood pressure were related to the de
PHENIX on-line systems
The PHENIX On-Line system takes signals from the Front End Modules (FEM) on each detector subsystem for the purpose of generating events for physics analysis. Processing of event data begins when the Data Collection Modules (DCM) receive data via fiber-optic links from the FEMs. The DCMs format and zero suppress the data and generate data packets. These packets go to the Event Builders (EvB) that

Kyrka och nationalsocialism. [Review of four books]
The influence of dough mixing time on wheat protein composition and gluten quality for four commercial flour mixtures
The effect of mixing time on wheat protein composition and gluten formation was studied for three commercial flour mixtures (biscuit, standard and strong) and one durum flour. Ultracentrifugation was used to separate the fresh, wet gluten from the wheat-flour dough immediately after mixing. Small deformation dynamic theological measurements and RP- and SE-HPLC were used to determine the characteri

Wound classification is more important than site of ulceration in the outcome of diabetic foot ulcers
The importance of wound classification and site of ulceration was evaluated in 314 consecutive diabetic patients with foot ulcers. The ulcers were classified as superficial (through the full thickness of the dermis; n = 150), deep (n = 50), osteomyelitis and/or abscess (n = 46), minor gangrene (n = 39) or major gangrene (n = 29). Wound healing was defined as intact skin for at least 6 months. In p
