Agriculture and animal production have a great environmental impact, which is steadily growing. In a previous article, we highlighted how biodiversity is vital for agricultural production, emphasizing the role of animal pollinators. Here, we discuss the different dimensions of food security and the key role of our food choices in the cities to drive land use in rural areas and minimize the environ
Clinical predictors of long-term survival in newly diagnosed transplant eligible multiple myeloma - an IMWG Research Project
PURPOSE: multiple myeloma is considered an incurable hematologic cancer but a subset of patients can achieve long-term remissions and survival. The present study examines the clinical features of long-term survival as it correlates to depth of disease response. PATIENTS & METHODS: this was a multi-institutional, international, retrospective analysis of high-dose melphalan-autologous stem cell
Effects of oxytocin and anaesthesia on vascular tone in pregnant women : a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study using non-invasive pulse wave analysis
BACKGROUND: Oxytocin is an uterotonic drug with profound cardiovascular effects, which in compromised patients could lead to serious events. The objective was to investigate whether oxytocin affects cardiac function and vascular tone in large and small arteries. We hypothesized that oxytocin decreases arterial vascular tone and elevates cardiac output. METHODS: 51 pregnant women were randomised to
Differential distribution of IgA-protease genotypes in mucosal and invasive isolates of Haemophilus influenzae in Sweden
BACKGROUND: Several different IgA-proteases exist in Haemophilus influenzae. The variants have been suggested to play differential roles in pathogenesis, but there is limited information on their distribution in clinical isolates. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of IgA-protease genotypes in H. influenzae and assess the association between IgA-protease genotype and t
Detailed Fluctuation Relation for Arbitrary Measurement and Feedback Schemes
Fluctuation relations are powerful equalities that hold far from equilibrium. However, the standard approach to include measurement and feedback schemes may become inapplicable in certain situations, including continuous measurements, precise measurements of continuous variables, and feedback induced irreversibility. Here we overcome these shortcomings by providing a recipe for producing detailed
Large variations in iron input to an oligotrophic Baltic Sea estuary : Impact on sedimentary phosphorus burial
Estuarine sediments are key sites for removal of phosphorus (P) from rivers and the open sea. Vivianite, an Fe(II)-P mineral, can act as a major sink for P in Fe-rich coastal sediments. In this study, we investigate the burial of P in the Öre Estuary in the northern Baltic Sea. We find much higher rates of P burial at our five study sites (up to ĝ1/4 0.145 molĝ€†mĝ'2ĝ€†yrĝ'1) when compa
Nanophotonic-Enhanced Two-Photon-Excited Photoluminescence of Perovskite Quantum Dots
All-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite colloidal quantum dots have recently emerged as a promising material for a variety of optoelectronic applications, among others for multiphoton-pumped lasing. Nevertheless, high irradiance levels are generally required for such multiphoton processes. One strategy to enhance the multiphoton absorption is taking advantage of high local light intensities using photoni
Diffusion and Concentration of Solids in the Dead Zone of a Protoplanetary Disk
The streaming instability is a promising mechanism to drive the formation of planetesimals in protoplanetary disks. To trigger this process, it has been argued that sedimentation of solids onto the mid-plane needs to be efficient, and therefore that a quiescent gaseous environment is required. It is often suggested that dead-zone or disk-wind structure created by non-ideal magnetohydrodynamical (M

Strategic narratives and US military bases in Japan: How ‘deterrence’ makes the Marine base on Okinawa ‘indispensable’
Governed directly by the US from the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 until its reversion to Japan in 1972, the island of Okinawa hosts the majority of US military bases in Japan despite comprising only a fraction of a percent of the total land area. The central government in Tokyo has refused to countenance revision of the status quo in the face of increasing local opposition, including mass protests an
Continuous flow atomic force microscopy imaging reveals fluidity and time-dependent interactions of antimicrobial dendrimer with model lipid membranes
In this paper, an amphiphilic peptide dendrimer with potential applications against multi-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus was synthesized and studied on model cell membranes. The combination of quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy imaging during continuous flow allowed for in situ monitoring of the very initial interaction processes and membrane transformations
Maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and offspring risk of hypertension : a population-based cohort and sibling study
BACKGROUND: Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are at increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. Offspring from pregnancies complicated by HDP also have worse cardiometabolic status in childhood and young adulthood, but the offspring risk of clinical hypertension in adulthood is largely unknown.METHODS: We studied 13,893 first-born a
Postpregnancy BMI in the Progression From Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy to Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE: To study the extent to which BMI after pregnancy adds to the elevated risk of postpregnancy type 2 diabetes in women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) (preeclampsia or gestational hypertension).RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used data from the Nurses' Health Study II, a prospective cohort study. In women aged 45-54 years without prior gestational diabetes mell
Heme induces endoplasmic reticulum stress (Hier stress) in human aortic smooth muscle cells
Accumulation of damaged or misfolded proteins resulted from oxidative protein modification induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress by activating the pathways of unfolded protein response. In pathologic hemolytic conditions, extracellular free hemoglobin is submitted to rapid oxidation causing heme release. Resident cells of atherosclerotic lesions, after intraplaque hemorrhage, are exposed to he
Connecting the Greenland ice-core and U/Th timescales via cosmogenic radionuclides : Testing the synchroneity of Dansgaard-Oeschger events
During the last glacial period Northern Hemisphere climate was characterized by extreme and abrupt climate changes, so-called Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events. Most clearly observed as temperature changes in Greenland ice-core records, their climatic imprint was geographically widespread. However, the temporal relation between DO events in Greenland and other regions is uncertain due to the chronolo
Production of π0 and η mesons in Cu+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV
Production of π0 and η mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. Measurements were performed in π0(η)→γγ decay channel in the 1(2)-20GeV/c transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu+Au collisions relative to the p+p results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions.
