Modeling of Protein Folding and Genetic Networks
Models for potein folding are developed and applied to peptides and small proteins with both α-helix and β-sheet structure. The energy functions, in which effective hydrophobicity forces and hydrogen bonds are taken to be the two central terms, are sequence-based and deliberately kept simple. The geometric representations of the protein chains are, by contrast, detailed and have torsion angles as
The main aim of my dissertation is to investigate som conceptions, power relations, and practices in the discourse of youth problems. I have studied some of the actors that are involved in the social constructing of the "juvenile delinquent" such as the police, the judical system, the social service, the media, the general public and last but not least, the young people themselves. The bulk of my
Soluble and Plant Available Phosphorus in Acid Soils
The P availability and solubility differ between soils and plants seem to have different ways of utilising the P present. The many P fractions present in soil interact and are closely related to another and transformations may easily occur. Due to this more P than the soluble fraction is available to plants. Different plant species utilise the P in soil differently; the relationship between the pl
Manipulation of Nanoparticles for Quantum and Single-Electron Devices
In this thesis a technique to manipulate nanoparticles with an atomic force microscope (AFM) is presented. Particles in the size range of 5-500 nm could be positioned in arbitrary two-dimensional patterns on different surfaces by mechanically pushing them with the AFM tip. The technique which is material-independent can be applied to any type of nanometer-sized particles or objects that are free t
GALIELLALACTONE ANALOGUES – SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES
Cancer cells use normal cell signalling pathways in a proliferative fashion in order to prolong their own survival. Inhibition of one of the major signal proteins, STAT3 (Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3) has previously been shown to induce apoptosis. Galiellalactone, a fungal metabolite, inhibits STAT3, thus presenting a potential lead for cancer treatment. The inhibition is bel
Dream Experience - Phenomenology meets Cognitive Neuroscience
This treatise examines what I call the ‘traditional view’ on the phenomenology of dreaming. According to this view, dreams are experienced in more or less the same way as waking reality – that is, our experience of “being-in-the-dream” is very much like our experience of “being-in-the-world”. The traditional view will be examined from three different standpoints: phenomenology, cognitive science a
Nonlinear Evolution in High Energy QCD
QCD at very high energies is still not very well understood. Difficulties arise from a strong non-linear dynamics and also from nonperturbative physics. Detailed analytic calculations are often only possible either for simple toy models, or for asymptotically high energies. In this thesis we investigate the high energy dynamics, with the goal of finding a realistic, working model for high energy Q
Floating-Point Analog-to-Digital Converter
To deal with the wide dynamic rage necessary for a radio receiver or corresponding applications, but to avoid impractically high resolution at high data rates, the approach of using a floating-point analog-to-digital converter (FP-ADC) has been investigated. This approach de-links the dynamic range with the resolution, and a very wide dynamic range can be achieved by an ADC with a moderate resolut
This thesis examine how farm-dwellers in the Mälaren region during the late Iron Age and early Middle Ages created, transferred, and preserved memory by deliberately placing new houses and graves on the houses and graves of previous generations. Focus is on memory as a social phenomenon and culture-specific resource created by these deliberate practices. The culture-specific element is oral cultur
The purpose of this thesis is to introduce the concept of distinctive competence in a multi-theoretical setting, consisting of the resource-based view, strategic human resource management and organizational learning, in order to develop a theoretical framework for better understanding of the dynamic side of distinctive competence. The empirical part of the study consists of an in-depth case study
The aim of the dissertation is to elucidate Iron Age settlement in southern Halland from two angles: (1) the evidence of antiquities (graves), ground finds of metal and rock, and place-names; (2) the information conveyed by investigations in settlement archaeology. The combined study of graves, ground finds, and place-names shows that the image of southern Halland in the Iron Age differs depending
Thermodynamics of Protein Folding and Design
The protein folding and protein design problems are addressed, using coarse-grained models with only two types of amino acids, hydrophobic and hydrophilic. In addition to hydrophobicity forces, the models contain sequence-independent local interactions which are found to strongly influence the thermodynamics of these models. The models are studied using the dynamical-parameter Monte Carlo method.
Pedagogical practice is, in several important considerations, contradictory in character. In this dissertation attenention is drawn towards the field of tension that prevails between pedagogical action, which can be descibed in terms of strategic processes and communicative pedagogical action. While the former places the preconditions for effective knowledge development of the individual at the ce
