The future of medical diagnostics: review paper

While histopathology of excised tissue remains the gold standard for diagnosis, several new, non-invasive diagnostic techniques are being developed. They rely on physical and biochemical changes that precede and mirror malignant change within tissue. The basic principle involves simple optical techniques of tissue interrogation. Their accuracy, expressed as sensitivity and specificity, are reporte

Den kulturella vändningens provokationer

This article is a reflection on the changing landscape of academic history in recent decades and it captures shifts in this landscape. The points made are several. Firstly, postmodernism - or rather the linguistic and cultural turn - does not represent a break with the traditional paradigm of history, although it has challenged and annoyed several historians. Neither is it a temporary fashion. Ins

Quantum refinement of [FeFe] hydrogenase indicates a dithiomethylamine ligand

The active site of the [FeFe] hydrogenases contains two Fe ions bound to one Cys ligand, three CO molecules, two CN(-) ions, and a dithiolate ligand. The nature of the last of these has been much discussed, and it has been suggested that it contains C, N, or O as the bridgehead atom. Most experimental studies indicate a N atom, whereas a recent density functional theory (DFT) study of a crystal st

Advancing adolescent health and health services in Saudi Arabia: exploring health-care providers' training, interest, and perceptions of the health-care needs of young people.

Adolescent health is regarded as central to global health goals. Investments made in adolescent health and health services protect the improvements witnessed in child health. Though Saudi Arabia has a large adolescent population, adolescent health-care only began to emerge in recent years, yet widespread uptake has been very limited. Health-care providers are key in addressing and providing the ne

Strömgren Survey for Asteroseismology and Galactic Archaeology: Let the SAGA Begin.

Asteroseismology has the capability of precisely determining stellar properties that would otherwise be inaccessible, such as radii, masses, and thus ages of stars. When coupling this information with classical determinations of stellar parameters, such as metallicities, effective temperatures, and angular diameters, powerful new diagnostics for Galactic studies can be obtained. The ongoing Stromg

Coherent psi (2S) photo-production in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76TeV

We have performed the first measurement of the coherent psi(2S) photo-production cross section in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This charmonium excited state is reconstructed via the psi(2S) -> l(+)l(-) and ->(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-) decays, where the J/psi decays into two leptons. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 22 mu b(-1

Dependency of dinoflagellate vertical migration on salinity stratification

Increasing precipitation and surface water temperature due to global change may strengthen the salinity gradient in coastal regions, which could influence the behaviour of dinoflagellate migration. We studied diel vertical migration (DVM) behaviour in the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum minimum and Heterocapsa triquetra using vertically stratified laboratory columns with 3 different salinity gradient

Single-particle Behavior at N=126: Isomeric Decays in Neutron-rich 204Pt

The four proton-hole nucleus Pt-204 was populated in the fragmentation of an E/A = 1 GeV Pb-208 beam. The yrast structure of Pt-204 has been observed up to angular momentum I = 10h by detecting delayed gamma-ray transitions originating from metastable states. These long-lived excited states have been identified to have spin-parities of I-pi = (10(+)), (7(-)), and (5(-)) and half-lives of T-1/2 = 1

Leptin is required for hypothalamic regulation of miRNAs targeting POMC 3'UTR.

The central nervous system (CNS) monitors modifications in metabolic parameters or hormone levels and elicits adaptive responses such as food intake regulation. Particularly, within the hypothalamus, leptin modulates the activity of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons which are critical regulators of energy balance. Consistent with a pivotal role of the melanocortin system in the control of energy

Människa och religion i klangens värld. Nutida vägar mot en teologisk musikestetik

The article presents and discusses a number of recent scholarly attempts to investigate theological and/or religious dimensions of music. On the basis of critical interpretations of these (Anglophone and German) contributions the article proposes an interdisciplinary approach to a theological aesthetics of music. Such a methodology necessitates any "theologizing" to respect the singular qualities

Field-Dependent DNA Mobility in 20 nm High Nanoslits.

The transport behavior of lambda-DNA (48 kbp) in fused silica nanoslits is investigated upon application of electrical fields of different strengths. The slit dimensions are 20 nm in height, 3 microm in width, and 500 microm in length. With fields of 30 kV/m or below, the molecules move fluently through the slits, while at higher electrical fields, the DNA molecules move intermittently, resulting

Practical Viewpoints on the Diagnosis and Management of Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT, type II) is an immune-mediated disorder due to antibodies formed against heparin platelet factor 4 complexes, usually appearing at days 5 to 14 after initiation of heparin. It is important to recognize HIT because heparin prophylaxis or treatment paradoxically associates with new venous and/or arterial thrombosis. Early clinical suspicion and diagnosis togeth

Vertical enhancement-mode InAs nanowire field-effect transistor with 50-nm wrap gate

We present results on fabrication and de characterization of vertical InAs nanowire wrap-gate field-effect transistor arrays with a gate length of 50 nm. The wrap gate is defined by evaporation of 50-nm Cr onto a 10-nm-thick HfO2 gate dielectric, where the gate is also separated from the source contact with a 100-nm SiOx spacer layer. For a drain voltage of 0.5 V, we observe a normalized transcond

Dimension of Countable Intersections of Some Sets Arising in Expansions in Non-Integer Bases

Abstract in Undetermined We consider expansions of real numbers in non-integer bases. These expansions are generated by beta-shifts. We prove that some sets arising in metric number theory have the countable intersection property. This allows us to consider sets of reals that have common properties in a countable number of different (non-integer) bases. Some of the results are new even for integer

The West African climate system: a review of the AMMA model inter-comparison initiatives

We review the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) model inter-comparison activities for West Africa. The Model Inter-comparison Project is an evaluation exercise of how global and regional atmospheric models represent seasonal and intra-seasonal variations of the climate and rainfall over the Sahel. The Land surface Model Inter-comparison Project in turn focuses on modelling critical
