Synthesis of 2'-Deoxyuridine 5'-(α,β-Imido)triphosphate: A Substrate Analogue and Potent Inhibitor of dUTPase
The dUDP analogue, 2'-deoxyuridine 5'-(α,β-imido)diphosphate (dUPNP) was synthesized. The corresponding triphosphate analogue (dUPNPP) was prepared by enzymic phosphorylation of dUPNP using the enzyme pyruvate kinase and phosphoenolpyruvate as the phosphate donor. This method was successful in phosphorylating the imidodiphosphate analogue of 2'-deoxythymidine (dTPNP) to 2'-deoxythymidine 5'-(α,β-i
The role of desmopressin in the treatment of adult nocturia
Revisiting the Ziegler-Nichols tuning rules for PI control - Part II, The frequency response method
This paper presents an analysis of the Ziegler-Nichols frequency response method for tuning PI controllers, showing that this method has severe limitations. The limitations can be overcome by a simple modification for processes where the time delay is not too short. By a major modification it is possible to obtain new tuning rules that also cover processes that are lag dominated.
Correlations in nuclear masses
It was recently suggested that the error with respect to experimental data in nuclear mass calculations is due to the presence of chaotic motion. The theory was tested by analyzing the typical error size. A more sensitive quantity, the correlations of the mass error between neighboring nuclei, is studied here. The results provide further support to this physical interpretation.
Effects of ultraviolet radiation on pigmentation, photoenzymatic repair, behavior, and community ecology of zooplankton.
In this report, we provide a perspective on how zooplankton are able to respond to present and future levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a threat that has been present throughout evolutionary time. To cope with this threat, zooplankton have evolved several adaptations including behavioral responses, repair systems, and accumulation of photoprotective compounds. Common photoprotective compounds
Development of silicon microstructures and thin-film MALDI target plates for automated proteomics sample identifications
Here we report on the development of a proteomic platform utilizing a piezoelectric flow-through dispensing unit made from silicon microstructures. The use of a novel surface coating, where matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) targets were uniformly precoated with a thin film of matrix/nitrocellulose, made the sample preparation straightforward an
Body awareness therapy for patients with fibromyalgia and chronic pain
There are several therapies designed to increase body awareness. They are commonly known as body awareness therapies ( BAT) and include Basic BAT, Mensendieck and Feldenkrais therapy. A focus on emotions is important in all these therapies. In this article the aim and development of Basic BAT is described together with evaluations of treatments including Basic BAT. Multidisciplinary studies have s
Revisiting the politics of expertise in light of the Kyoto negotiations on land use change and forestry
This paper examines the close links between knowledge-making authority and decision making authority in the multilateral negotiations on terrestrial sinks of greenhouse gases. Drawing upon social constructivist science studies and public sphere theories in international relations, the paper traces the communicative contexts in which state actors have struggled to bring meaning to the sink concept
Contact allergy to gold in patients with gold-plated intracoronary stents.
An increasingly common and effective method for the treatment of atherosclerotic disease in the coronary arteries is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and stenting. The stents are made of different metals. An increased rate of restenosis when using gold-plated stents has been shown. Contact allergy to gold is common in many countries. Recently, a study has shown an increased ra
Abnormal cytoskeletal protein expression in cultured skin fibroblasts form type 1 diabetes mellitus patiens with nephropathy: A proteomic approach
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) develops in about 40% of insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes mellitus (TlDM) patients, and is associated not only with diabetes duration and metabolic control, but also with a genetic predisposition. Constitutive alterations of cytoskeletal proteins may play a role in the development of DN. We investigated the expression of these proteins in cultured skin fibroblasts, obtai
Efficacy and safety of fixed low-dose dalteparin in preventing venous thromboembolism among obese or elderly hospitalized patients - A subgroup analysis of the PREVENT Trial
Background: We were concerned that a fixed rather than a weight-based dosing regimen of dalteparin sodium to prevent venous thromboembolism. (VTE) might result in decreased efficacy in obese patients and decreased safety in elderly patients. Methods: We retrospectively performed subgroup analyses using the database from the Prospective Evaluation of Dalteparin Efficacy for Prevention of VTE in Imm
Breast cancer incidence in ex-smokers in relation to body mass index, weight gain and blood lipid levels
According to several studies breast cancer is more common among former smokers. This study explores whether this association has any relationship with anthropometric measurements or blood lipid levels. The 2082 ex-smokers (mean age 49.9 years) in the Malmo Preventive Cohort were followed for an average of 13.3 years using official cancer registries. This yielded 93 incident breast cancer cases. Oe
Novel markers of normal and neoplastic human plasmacytoid dendritic cells
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are involved in innate immunity (eg, by secreting interferons) and also give rise to CD4(+)CD56(+) hematodermic neoplasms. We report extensive characterization of human pDCs in routine tissue samples, documenting the expression of 19 immunohistologic markers, including signaling molecules (eg, BLNK), transcription factors (eg, ICSBP/IRF8 and PU.1), and Toll-like
Determination of sentinel lymph node (SLN) status in primary breast cancer by prospective use of immunohistochemistry increases the rate of micrometastases and isolated tumour cells: Analysis of 174 patients after SLN biopsy.
Aim: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prospective use of immunohistochemistry (IHC) for histopathological diagnosis of sentinel lymph node(s) (SLN) in primary breast cancer using stage migration and non-SLN metastases as endpoints in relation to metastatic involvement. Method: Serial sectioning and prospective use of IHC were applied to SLN examination in addition to routine

Altered swallowing function in elderly patients without dysphagia: radiologic findings in 56 cases
Swallowing disorder is an increasing problem in our aging population. A majority of these patients have a functional abnormality of the oral, pharyngeal, and/or esophageal stage of swallowing. However, what constitutes normalcy is not well understood, and baseline swallowing in elderly persons without dysphagia has not been adequately described. We therefore evaluated 56 persons with a mean age of
Changes in accessibility and usability in housing: an exploration of the housing adaptation process.
Cinematic Sex Education in the Twenty-First Century: Narration, Reflexivity and Sexuality in Kärlekens språk (2004)
Comparative study of the Swedish sex education film "Kärlekens språk" (2004). Particular focus is given narration, reflexivity and sexuality.
Lasp1 misexpression influences chondrocyte differentiation in the vertebral column
The mouse mutant wavy tail Tg(Col1a1-lacZ)304ng was created through transgene insertion and exhibits defects of the vertebral column. Homozygous mutant animals have compressed tail vertebrae and wedge-shaped intervertebral discs, resulting in a meandering tail. Delayed closure of lumbar neural arches and lack of processus spinosi have been observed; these defects become most prominent during the t
