Build a linear accelerator model

Build a linear accelerator to demonstrate spallation – the source of high-energy neutrons used by the new European Spallation Source being built in Sweden. In this activity, we build a model of a linear accelerator (linac) called a Gauss cannon. It uses magnetic attraction and momentum transfer to accelerate a series of steel balls, representing protons. At the end of the track, one ‘proton’ will c

Tooth Beads in Two Hunter-Fisher-Gatherer Societies of Northern Europe

Beads made from animal teeth were an important form ofdecoration among hunter-gatherer societies in Northern Europe. The analyses presented in this paper are based on questionsregarding the design of the beads, the choice of animal teeth, their placement on the costume, and the exchange of beads. Interactions of particles, adjectival resultatives and benefactive double object constructions in Norwegian

In this paper, I take a closer look at a set of observations concerning word order and co-occurrence restrictions on verb-particle constructions, berefactive double object constructions and resultative constructions in Norwegian. While a particle can co-occur with both a beneficiary DP and a resultative AP, beneficiary DPs and resultatives cannot co-occur at all. I give an analysis in terms of the

Lexikal organisation hos en- och flerspråkiga skolbarn med språkstörning

Children with language impairment (LI) often exhibit lexical difficulties with negative consequences for school success. Lexical size and lexical organization have both been found to be affected, with problems in lexical organization exceeding those in lexical size. The research on LI has had a long-standing focus on monolingual children, resulting in assessment routines ill-suited for bilingual c

Female urinary incontinence. A study on heredity, urodynamic and hormonal factors and the evaluation of a novel surgical technique

Abstract Pelvic floor disorders (PFD) represent a major public health issue worldwide. Aims of this work Study I: to investigate associations between preoperative resting urethral parameters (MUCP, FL and CA) and objective outcome of laparoscopic colposuspension and, if possible, to identify cutoff values useful in clinical practice. Study II: to investigate a group of perimenopausal women reporti

A rapid and simple ABO genotype screening method using a novel B/O2 versus A/O2 discriminating nucleotide substitution at the ABO locus

An ABO genotype screening method discriminating the common alleles A1, A2, B, O1 and O2 at the ABO locus was made possible by the discovery of a novel nucleotide substitution (G1096A) present only in B and O2 alleles. A rapid and reliable single-tube approach using multiplex PCR with four primers amplifying exons 6 and 7 of the ABO genes followed by simultaneous addition of two restriction enzymes

A Lutheran in the Holy Land: Michael Eneman´s Journey, 1711-12

The collection examines the view of the holiness in the "Holy Land" through the writings of pilgrims, travelers, and missionaries. The period extends from 1517, the Ottoman conquest of Syria and Palestine, to the Franco-British treaty of Utrecht in 1713 and the consolidation of European hegemony over the Mediterranean. The writers in the collection include Christians (Orthodox, Protestant, and Cat

Collective Trust Behavior

This paper investigates trust behavior in situations where decision-makers are large groups and the decision mechanism is collective. Theories from behavioral economics and psychology suggest that trust in such situations may differ from interindividual trust. The experimental results here reveal a large difference in trust but not in trustworthiness between the individual and collective setting.

Impaired Fibrous Repair: A Possible Contributor to Atherosclerotic Plaque Vulnerability in Patients With Type II Diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) type II is increasing rapidly worldwide. Patients with DM II have a greater atherosclerotic burden and higher risk of developing cardiovascular complications. Inflammation has been proposed as the main cause for the high risk of atherosclerotic disease in DM II. In this study, we compared markers of inflammation and fibrous repair in plaques from subjects with and without DM

From Discourse to Rules in Environmental Policy: Merging Habermas Model of Deliberative Democracy with the Policy Arrangement Approach

This paper aims to develop a framework for an integrated empirical and normative policy analysis practicable for evaluating environmental and forest sub-policies regarding their contribution to democratic policy-making. For this reason Habermas meta-model on deliberative democracy is translated to the policy level by merging it with the Policy Arrangement Approach (PAA) of Arts and Van Tatenhove.

Devising a best practice approach to prophylaxis in boys with severe haemophilia: evaluation of current treatment strategies

Data from prospective studies clearly demonstrate the efficacy of prophylactic treatment of haemophilia in reducing joint- or life-threatening bleeding and the associated consequences for quality of life. Debate remains, however, regarding the optimal implementation of prophylaxis. Our aim in this review was to identify a best practice approach to factor replacement prophylaxis in boys with haemop

Melatonin heals the gut

Excess alcohol consumption and stress are suggested to be key elements in the development of gastrointestinal disorders (Konturek et al., 2011). Dysfunction of the small intestinal barrier function with increased permeability is a common clinical observation in patients with inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) and alcoholic liver disease (Sommansson et al., 2013b). Therapeutic administration of the
