Decomposing grade inflation in Sweden's compulsory school

In Swedish media, there has been a heated debate regarding the school system. Since 1992, free schools, which are similar to voucher schools, have been permitted as a competitor to municipal schools. This was combined with a new grading system where knowledge based criteria were implemented as opposed to the previous normally distributed grading system. Due to Sweden’s lack of standardised and cen

Legal Power: The Basic Definition

The concept of legal power (often called legal competence) is important inthe law since, with regard to actions having legal effect, the “exercise of legal power” delimits those actions for which manifestation of intention to achieve a legal effect is essential for the effect to ensue. The paper proposes a definition that captures this feature of legal power and marks it off from “direct effect,” The concept of legal power (often called legal competence) is important in the law since, with regard to actions having legal effect, the “exercise of legal power” delimits those actions for which manifestation of intention to achieve a legal effect is essential for the effect to ensue. The GTPase domain of gamma-tubulin is required for normal mitochondrial function and spatial organization

In the cell, γ-tubulin establishes a cellular network of threads named the γ-string meshwork. However, the functions of this meshwork remain to be determined. We investigated the traits of the meshwork and show that γ-strings have the ability to connect the cytoplasm and the mitochondrial DNA together. Acetonitrile and Propionitrile Exchange at Palladium(II) and Platinum(II)

Ligand exchange at square-planar [Pd(MeCN)4]2+ and [Pd(EtCN)4]2+ has been studied by 1H NMR line broadening and at [Pt(MeCN)4]2+ and [Pt(EtCN)4]2+ by isotopic labelling using 1H NMR spectroscopy in deuteriated nitromethane. Exchange takes place via two-term rate laws Rex/4 = (k1 + k2[RCN])cM with well defined k1 paths. Rate constants per co-ordination site k1298/s–1, k2298/kg mol–1 s–1 are 6.9 ± 1Ligand exchange at square-planar [Pd(MeCN)4]2+ and [Pd(EtCN)4]2+ has been studied by 1H NMR line broadening and at [Pt(MeCN)4]2+ and [Pt(EtCN)4]2+ by isotopic labelling using 1H NMR spectroscopy in deuteriated nitromethane. Numerical study of thermo-acoustic waves generation by a swirling flame using a new approach based on large eddy simulation

The new challenge of the Gas Turbine industry is to develop new technologies for meeting electricity demand growth and reducing harmful emissions. Thus, a better understanding of the combustion phenomenon and an improvement in simulation capabilities are needed. In this paper, we present a new technique that is computationally efficient, for capturing the thermo-acoustic waves in low Mach number c

Small-Scale Dosimetry for the Testis: Applications in Nuclear Medicine Diagnostics and Therapy

Popular Abstract in English 111-Indium is a radioactive isotope that can be chemically linked to different molecules. When this compound is given to patients is distributed heterogeneously within the structures that build up the testicle. Different parts of the so-called germ cells are sensitive to radiation in different ways. Therefore, if a radioisotope that send out electrons with low energies It is well known that the testicles are among the most radiosensitive tissue, and constitute an important critical target for both external and internal radiation during diagnostic and therapeutic use of radionuclides. In systemic radionuclide therapy where very high activities are administered, the testis may become a dose-limiting organ; often with a complex, non-uniform activity distribution an

Implicit versus explicit solvent in free energy calculations of enzyme catalysis: Methyl transfer catalyzed by catechol O-methyltransferase

We compare free energy calculations for the methyl transfer reaction catalyzed by catechol O-methyltransferase using the quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical free energy method with implicit and explicit solvents. An analogous methylation reaction in a solution is also studied. For the explicit solvent model, we use the three-point transferable intermolecular potential model, and for the implic

Inverse Acoustic Problems under Spatial Uncertainties

Many spatial audio applications, including active noise control, virtual reality, and the generation of individual sound zones, rely on an understanding of acoustic propagation. In room acoustics, which is the focus of this thesis, the sound field generated by a point source is typically modelled as a linear time-invariant system, described by its room impulse response (RIR). The RIR captures the r

Partial nitrification in MBBRs for mainstream deammonification with thin biofilms and alternating feed supply

A new principle for mainstream nitrogen removal through nitritation followed by anammox was studied in a two-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) configuration. The first stage was optimized for nitritation by using thin biofilms and a feed alternating between synthetic mainstream wastewater at 15°C and, for shorter periods, synthetic reject water at 30 °C. The exposure of the biofilm to reject

Yes we can - stop keystone pipeline

The aim of this thesis is to gather an understanding of the creation of unlikely alliances within the environmental movement as a social movement. This is done in turn done by looking at the resistance among the environmental movement as well as grassroots organizations that arose around the proposal to build a pipeline called Keystone XL made by the Canadian oil company TransCanada in 2008. The f

Code and Inference in metaphor comprehension: interpretation of metaphorical language in Dante's Inferno by Italians and Australians

This thesis investigates the interpretation of metaphorical expressions in Dante’s famous Inferno and how this may be motivated through the use of codes and inference. Based on Coseriu’s Integral Linguistics (Coseriu, 1985), metaphorical expressions can be divided depending on the kind of knowledge that is required to interpret them. The first level is the universal level where metaphors can be in

Opportunities and threats – will China manage its third transition?

Last three decades, China has experienced a stunning economic development, which has transformed the whole county on various levels. Until now, China has followed investment and export led growth and has become the world’s largest manufacturer. However, under the veil of rapid growth, social and economic imbalances have emerged causing a number of serious challenges facing China. Moreover, the Chi

Miljöhänsyn och sociala hänsyn i offentlig upphandling - En implementeringsstudie av livsmedelsupphandlingen i Sveriges tre största kommuner

In this case study the author first investigates how environmental and social considerations are being implemented in the Swedish public procurement process. After that the author tries to explain these descriptions using theories on public policy implementation. A distinction is made to the food procurement process in Sweden’s three largest primary municipalities. Through the study of local polic

Domstolens riskbedömning vid vårdnads-, boende- och umgängestvister

Summary This thesis is a study which primary objective is to examine the court´s risk assessment in legal custody, and contact disputes when a child is at risk of being harmed. My thesis also includes an interdisciplinary perspective to give a more detailed understanding of the process – of which consequences it entails if authorities and courts don´t make reliable risk assessments. Physical, psyc
