A decade of progress in understanding the structural basis of protein synthesis

The key reaction of protein synthesis, peptidyl transfer, is catalysed in all living organisms by the ribosome - an advanced and highly efficient molecular machine. During the last decade extensive X-ray crystallographic and NMR studies of the three-dimensional structure of ribosomal proteins, ribosomal RNA components and their complexes with ribosomal proteins, and of several translation factors

Effect of nedocromil sodium on non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neural responses in guinea pig bronchi in vitro

OBJECTIVE: Nedocromil sodium (nedocromil) improves the clinical condition of asthmatic subjects but its mechanism of action is not fully understood. This study aimed to determine whether nedocromil alters the ability of contractile and relaxant non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neural (NANC) responses to stabilise tone by inhibiting or potentiating these responses in bronchial smooth muscle and, if

Comparison of the chemical properties of iron and cobalt porphyrins and corrins.

Density functional calculations have been used to compare various geometric, electronic and functional properties of iron and cobalt porphyrin (Por) and corrin (Cor) species. The investigation is focussed on octahedral MII/III complexes (where M is the metal) with two axial imidazole ligands (as a model of b and c type cytochromes) or with one imidazole and one methyl ligand (as a model of methylc

The diffusion of water vapour through pulp and paper

The diffusion of water vapour through pulp and paper was investigated experimentally in a diffusion cell. The diffusion cell consisted of two chambers differing in relative humidity. Any given sample was placed as a barrier between the two chambers. Two pulp qualities and eleven paper grades were included in the investigation. The diffusivities measured ranged from 2.1-10(-8) m2/s to 5.4.10(-6) m2

Molecularly imprinted polymers in capillary electrochromatography: Recent developments and future trends.

The developments in molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based capillary electrochromatography (CEC) achieved during the past years are reviewed in this article. The MIP is prepared using a templated polymerization reaction and results in a material with a high selectivity towards a predetermined target. The selectivity of the MIP is comparable to that of the biological antibodies, however, the MIP

Thin layers of GaInP, GaP and GaAsP in metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy-grown resonant tunnelling diodes

We have studied the epitaxial growth and electrical performance of Al-free, GaAs-based, resonant tunnelling diodes (RTDs) including thin barriers of GaInP, GO, or GaAsxP1-x. n-Type tunnelling diodes have been fabricated and the symmetry in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, as well as the peak-to-valley ratios, are found to be sensitive probes for the inter-face quality in the heterostruct

Serum Response Factor Controls CYLD Expression via MAPK Signaling Pathway.

Tumor suppressor gene CYLD is a deubiquitinating enzyme which negatively regulates various signaling pathways by removing the lysine 63-linked polyubiquitin chains from several specific substrates. Loss of CYLD in different types of tumors leads to either cell survival or proliferation. In this study we demonstrate that lack of CYLD expression in CYLD-/- MEFs increases proliferation rate of these

Unsuccessful use of a titanium mesh cage in ankle arthrodesis: a report on three cases operated on due to a failed ankle replacement.

Three patients with a failed total ankle arthroplasty underwent tibiocalcaneal arthrodesis. In an attempt to preserve leg length, a titanium cage filled with autologous bone was placed in the defect. None of the ankles healed primarily. After 9 to 29 months, the cages, which only contained necrotic material, were removed and repeat arthrodesis was performed using a retrograde intramedullary nail.

Laser Sensing for Quality Control and Classification – Applications for the Food Industry, Ecology and Medicine

Monitoring constitutes a cornerstone, both for efficient control of optimized industrial processes and for obtaining knowledge about non-controlled, natural phenomena. This thesis is all about monitoring, or measurements. In this case the primary information is gathered with light, and in a non-intrusive, and usually a stand-off or remote way. The applications of optical monitoring in this work

Bedside Point of Care Coagulation Testing for Individualized Antivitamin K Reversal: A Prospective Study

A delay in surgery due to laboratory abnormalities may increase mortality in patients with hip fracture. In order to optimize the logistics for urgent surgery in patients with hip fractures and anti-vitamin K treatment, individualized doses of a Prothrombin Concentrate were guided by a bedside whole blood prothrombin time test. Thirty patients with emergency hip fracture and preoperative anti-vit
