Auger electron-ion coincidence studies to probe molecular dynamics
Electron analysis combined with ion mass spectrometry is shown to be a unique tool to understand fragmentation dynamics of core-excited molecules. This article describes in detail a new setup devoted to energy and angle correlations measurements between the emitted particles resulting from inner-shell ionization or excitation. The data collection system is based on a pair of position sensitive det
Effect of high-dose vitamin A supplementation on the immune response to Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccines
Background: Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) at birth has been associated with decreased mortality in Asia. Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is given at birth in tuberculosis-endemic countries. Previous studies suggest that VAS may influence the immune response to vaccines. Objective: Our objective was to examine whether VAS influences the immune response to simultaneously administered BCG vac
Quantitative studies of liver atrophy after portacaval shunt in the rat
Background. It is well known that portacaval shunting ultimately leads to a decrease in liver volume and hepatic function, but the mechanism is uncertain. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of portacaval shunting (PCS) upon the morphological changes that occur in the liver in rats after port caval. anastomosis. Materials and methods. Sixty-six male rats underwent either PCS (n
Quality of care in geriatric rehabilitation: Clients’ perceptions, ADL dependence, and subjective well-being in a one-year perspective.
World-wide, the development of community-based geriatric rehabilitation has received increased attention. In Sweden, national reforms during the 1990s aimed at improved quality of geriatric rehabilitation. This paper focuses clients' perceptions of the rehabilitation process, dependence in activities of daily living (ADL), and subjective well-being in a one-year perspective. A study-specific quest
Analysis of decay data from neutron-rich nuclei
The beta -decays of the neutron-rich nuclei Be-12 and Ne-29 have been studied. The statistical correlations between the almost identical half-lives of Be-12 and its daughter B-12 are analysed for a large sample of Be-12 decay data. Stringent mutual bounds are obtained on the parameter set, leading to a precise determination of the Be-12 half-life of 21.50 +/- 0.04 ms. From a simultaneous detection

Assessment of liver disease and biochemical and immunological markers in Swedish blood donors with isolated GB virus C/hepatitis G virus viremia
OBJECTIVE: To investigate signs of liver disease, and biochemical and immunological markers in blood donors with isolated GBV-C/HGV viremia. METHODS: Eighteen donors with isolated GBV-C/HGV viremia were followed up 3-5 years after initial identification. Testing for GBV-C/HGV RNA, GBV-C/HGV-E2 antibodies and a range of biochemical and immunological tests was performed. Thirteen donors consented to
Phase separation and charge localization in UHV-lithiated anatase TiO2 nanoparticles
The insertion of lithium in anatase TiO2 nanoparticles under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions is studied using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) at the Ti L-2,L-3 edge. It is demonstrated that XAS can be used to monitor the separation into an anatase phase and a lithium titanate phase of formal stoichiometry Li0.5TiO2. The initial state properties
Hydrogen-Bond Promoted Intramolecular Electron Transfer to Photogenerated Ru(III): A Functional Mimic of TyrosineZ and Histidine 190 in Photosystem II
As a model for redox components on the donor side of photosystem II (PS II) in green plants, a supramolecular complex 4 has been prepared. In this, a ruthenium(II) tris-bipyridyl complex which mimics the function of P680 in PS II, has been covalently linked to a tyrosine unit which bears two hydrogen-bonding substituents, dipicolylamine (dpa) ligands. Our aim is to mimic the interaction between ty
Neutron Production by 200 mJ Ultrashort Laser Pulses
We report the observation of neutrons rf:leased from d(d,n) He-3 fusion reactions in the focus of 200 mJ, 160 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses on a deuterated polyethylene target. Optimizing the fast electron and ion generation by applying a well-defined prepulse led to an average rate of 140 neutrons per shot. Furthermore, the production of a substantial number of MeV gamma rays could be observed. The
Inside the Guru's Gate : Ritual Uses of Texts among the Sikhs in Varanasi
For religious Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib is a holy scripture which enshrines ontologically divine words and the teaching and revelatory experiences of historical human Gurus. Simultaneously the Sikhs have taken the concept of a sacred scripture much further than any other religious community by treating the Guru Granth Sahib as a living Guru invested with spiritual authority and agency

Approximation algorithms for time-dependent orienteering
The time-dependent orienteering problem is dual to the time-dependent traveling salesman problem. It consists of visiting a maximum number of sites within a given deadline. The traveling time between two sites is in general dependent on the starting time. For ε greater than or equal 0, we provide a (2+ ε)-approximation algorithm for the time-dependent orienteering problem which runs in polynomial
Computer supported visualisation of quality systems developed by network teams
This paper reports a pilot study and three case studies to examine aimed at studying if a quality system, according to the ISO 9000 quality standard, can be visualised, exploring how the visualisation should be designed in order to support continuous improvements and evaluating the design process for development of prototypes. By discussing with the research team, three companies in southern Swede
