Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of pT,γ1(2)> 40 (30) GeV for the leading
Patients' experiences before, during, and after a colonoscopy procedure : A qualitative study
Although colonoscopy is a common examination, there is limited research focusing on how patients experience this procedure. It is important that a colonoscopy is tolerated, as it may lead to lifesaving diagnostics and treatment. This study aims to explore adult patients' experience of undergoing a colonoscopy regarding the time prior to, during, and after the procedure. This was a qualitative stud
HUMAN CYSTATIN C. Studies on structure and function of a cysteine proteinase inhibitor. Relation to hereditary cerebral haemorrhage with amyloidosis.
Six different cysteine proteinase inhibitors (cystatins) were isolated from human urine and characterized. Five of them......
Immediate Full Weight-Bearing Versus Partial Weight-Bearing After Plate Fixation of Distal Femur Fractures in Elderly Patients. A Randomized Controlled Trial
Introduction: After surgery for distal femur fractures in elderly patients, weight-bearing is commonly restricted. Immediate non-restrictive weight-bearing might have beneficial effects. There are no randomized studies on the topic. The purpose of this study was to compare the functional outcome between immediate full weight-bearing (FWB) as tolerated and partial weight-bearing (PWB) during the fi

Symbolae sacrae : Symbolic formulae for protection and adoration within the quarries of Gebel el-Silsila
Within the grand sandstone quarries of Gebel el-Silsila is a vast amount of unique symbolic representations; stylized iconographic and pseudo-scripted signs and marks that to some extent signify deities and their protection against demons, evil and mishaps. Like written protective formulae, these marks were placed within the quarries to symbolically safe-keep the quarry workers, and for expressing
Patients' Perceptions of Person-Centered Care in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Qualitative Study
ObjectiveMost research on patient experiences of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) care is performed with patients who have established RA and less often with patients with early RA. Experiences of and expectations about health care may change over time, which is why the aim was to explore patients’ perceptions of person-centered care (PCC) early in the RA disease course.MethodsThirty-one patients with ea
Sentiments of Segregation : The Emotional Politics of Apartheid in South Africa, c. 1948-1990
This dissertation studies the relationship between emotions and the everday application of apartheid in South Africa between 1948 and 1990. Histories of apartheid have long been politics-driven, focusing on the rise and fall of the regime with its reception being studied primarily through the lens of the popular struggle that, in part, led to apartheid’s downfall. Thus, the lived experience and re

Healthy Lifestyle and Mortality Among Adults Receiving Hemodialysis : The DIET-HD Study
Rationale & Objective: A healthy lifestyle promotes cardiovascular health and reduces cardiac-related mortality in the general population, but its benefits for people receiving maintenance hemodialysis are uncertain. Study Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting & Participants: 5,483 of 9,757 consecutive adults receiving maintenance hemodialysis (January 2014 to June 2017, median dialysi
Independent validation of a pre-specified four-kallikrein marker model for prediction of adverse pathology and biochemical recurrence
Background: Accurate markers for prostate cancer (PC) risk stratification could aid decision-making for initial management strategies. The 4Kscore has an undefined role in predicting outcomes after radical prostatectomy (RP). Methods: We included 1476 patients with 4Kscore measured prior to RP at two institutions. The 4Kscore was assessed for prediction of adverse pathology at RP and biochemical r
Regulating genetic engineering guided by human dignity, not genetic essentialism
How might a liberal democratic community best regulate human genetic engineering? Relevant debates widely deploy the usually undefined term “human dignity.” Its indeterminacy in meaning and use renders it useless as a guiding principle. In this article, I reject the human genome as somehow invested with a moral status, a position I call “genetic essentialism.” I explain why a critique of genetic e
Oppression, Dominance, and Power
This chapter proceeds from the contention that analysing power, oppression, and dominance together – particularly accounting for the experience of being subjected to oppression and dominance in a context of power – reveals deficiencies in what is here referred to as the standard view of what power is. On the standard view, “power” is a purposive capacity concept about what some people do or can do
Human Rights and Republicanism
Republican political theory, with its commitment to a political and personal conception of freedom in terms of the absence of domination, has the potential to revitalize how we think about human rights. From a republican perspective, the aims of the politics of human rights are—in negative terms—to end exploitation, vulnerability, and precarity and—in positive terms—to establish a society of equal
The protective gene dose effect of the APOE ε2 allele on gray matter volume in cognitively unimpaired individuals
Introduction: Harboring two copies of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε2 allele strongly protects against Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effect of this genotype on gray matter (GM) volume in cognitively unimpaired individuals has not yet been described. Methods: Multicenter brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs) from cognitively unimpaired ε2 homozygotes were matched (1:1) against all other AP
Unmasking the drivers and implementation of change
This paper investigates the drivers for, and implementation of, digital transformation projects and organizational change initiatives in 20 companies in the UK. The study follows on previous research based on the Socio-Technical Toolbox [STT], specifically focusing on the activity analysis and employees’ experience and participation in the change initiative or digital transformation project.
Revisiting Ancient and Modern Liberty : On de Dijn’s Freedom: An Unruly History
Annelien de Dijn’s Freedom: An Unruly History is a rich and thought-provoking work in intellectual history, tracing thinking and debating about political freedom in the West from ancient Greece to our own times. The ancient notion of freedom as self-government (what Quentin Skinner calls neo-roman liberty) is referred to as the ‘democratic conception’. The argument is that this conception survived
Associations of Red Cell Distribution Width With Coronary Artery Calcium in the General Population
Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the variability of erythrocyte volumes. RDW has been associated with incidence of cardiovascular diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms for the increased cardiovascular risk are still unclear. This study aimed to examine associations of RDW and coronary atherosclerosis in the general population. Computed tomography was performed and RDW was m
