The course consists of a study of a selection of English literary works taken from the period from the Renaissance to the present day. These works are selected to ensure that a range of genres and themes are represented so as to provide the student with a basis on which to apply various literary approaches. Both terminology used in literary studies and perspectives from both early and recent literary scholarship are applied during the discussion of literary texts. Such perspectives are introduced by scholarly articles and similar reading material which is studied alongside the literary texts. Students develop their ability to analyse texts with regard to both literature and literary scholarship in the context of seminar discussions. They also learn to argue their viewpoints, understand the connection between text and context, and reflect on the importance of literary studies for the survival of literature both at academic and nonacademic levels.
The course is included in the Master of Arts programme in Literature – Culture – Media with a specialisation in English Literature. It is also offered as a single course.
