Course
Course 7.5 credits • LINN21
The course deals with either a language, a family of languages, or a linguistic area, which is structurally different from prototypical European languages. The focus is not to gain practical training in a specific language. Rather, the course focuses on knowledge of typological structures that are different from languages that most students are used to. Moreover, the course deals with how linguistic patterns can be impacted by linguistic contact. In the spring semester of 2026, the course will focus on the Austronesian language family.
The Austronesian languages are the second largest language family in the world with over 1200 languages. They span from Madagascar to Easter Island and are the dominant language family of island South East Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The course will offer an overview of the Austronesian languages, synchronically and historically, with individual detailed descriptions of selected languages from various branches of the language family.
