LINGUISTICS SEMINAR: Tiziana Jäggi (Fribourg) -- Public Perceptions of the Norwegian Pronoun Hen: Linguistic and Social Implications
In June 2022, the pronoun hen was officially incorporated into Norwegian spelling norms following a proposal by the Language Council of Norway. This gender-inclusive pronoun serves two primary functions: as a gender-unmarked form for non-gendered reference when gender is unknown, insignificant, or concealed, and as a gender-marked form for individuals who prefer hen over han (he) or hun (she). Its introduction is viewed as a step toward fostering linguistic inclusivity and reducing gender-related biases and prejudices. The pronoun's role in enhancing the visibility of non-binary individuals is particularly significant, given the absence of legal recognition for a third gender identity in Norway.
Despite the limited research on Norwegian hen, discussions surrounding its use predominantly revolve around its gender-marked function for non-binary individuals. Advocates highlight its potential to strengthen social identity and belonging through the acceptance of a third pronoun, while opponents argue for maintaining a traditional binary gender system. In contrast, the gender-unmarked usage of hen faces less resistance, though it is often perceived as redundant due to existing alternatives in the language.
Through an experimental survey of the general public in Norway, this study examines the impact of hen as a referential strategy on perceived text quality and explores societal attitudes toward both the pronoun itself and the broader conceptualization of non-binary gender. By doing so, it contributes to a deeper understanding of public perspectives on this linguistic shift—one that reflects broader societal movement toward gender inclusivity.
This event is co-organized by French Linguistics and General Linguistics.
