Two ongoing research projects conducted in the context of the basic language education program Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) are discussed in relation to each other. They focus on vocabulary, vocabulary-learning strategies, and writing development. Preliminary results are presented, and methodological challenges associated with researching L2 learning among adults of varying educational background are highlighted.
