Aqueous polymer two-phase systems formed by new thermoseparating polymers
A set of new polymers that can be used as phase forming components in aqueous two-phase systems is presented. All polymers studied have thermoseparating properties i.e. form one separate polymer enriched phase and one aqueous solution when heated above the critical temperature. This property makes the polymers attractive alternatives to the polymers used in traditional aqueous two-phase systems su
Generation of attosecond pulses in molecular nitrogen
We have generated attosecond pulse trains in an ensemble of randomly aligned nitrogen molecules. Measurements of the high-order harmonic relative phases and amplitudes allow us to reconstruct the temporal profile of the attosecond pulses. We show that in the considered spectral range, the latter is very similar to the pulse train generated in argon under the same conditions. We discuss the possibl
Isolation and characterisation of putative adhesins from Helicobacter pylori with affinity for heparan sulphate proteoglycan
A pool of heparan sulphate-binding proteins (HSBPs) from Helicobacter pylori culture supernates was obtained by sequential ammonium sulphate precipitation and affinity chromatography on heparin-Sepharose, The chromatographic procedure yielded one major fraction that contained proteins with heparan sulphate affinity as revealed by inhibition studies of heparan sulphate binding to H. pylori cells. P
Characterization of two novel cutaneous human papillomaviruses, HPV93 and HPV96.
Two novel human papillomaviruses (HPVs), HPV93 and HPV96, with genomes of 7450 and 7438 bp, respectively, are described. The Ll open reading frame of HPV93 showed highest identity to HPV24 (79%) and that of HPV96 had highest identity to HPV92 (71 %). Real-time PCR for HPV92, 93 and 96 on stripped biopsies from tumours and healthy skin from 269 immunocompetent patients found HPV DNA in 2.6 % of tum

Geography and geometry of pre-Caledonian western Baltica: U-Pb geochronology and Palaeomagnetism
Innan uppkomsten av Eurasia har Skandinavien i omgångar tillhört andra konstellatiIn an attempt to reconstruct the pre-Caledonian cratonic margin of Fennoscandia, U-Pb geochronological and geochemical investigations have been performed on allochthonous orthogneisses in the northern Swedish Caledonides. The crystalline basement of the nappes have also been examined to further constrain the continuation of various chronologically defined orogenic belts. To constrain the global pa
Tumor specific VEGF-A and VEGFR2/KDR protein are co-expressed in breast cancer
Angiogenesis is a prognostic indicator in primary breast cancer regulated by specific angiogenic factors and their receptors. Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), so far considered the most important, acts through dimerization of the receptor VEGFR2/KDR within the receptor tyrosine kinase family of VEGF receptors. In order to study the interplay between VEGF-A and VEGFR2/KDR in breast ca
Recent Results in Fragmentation Isomer Spectroscopy with RISING
The first results from the stopped beam RISING experimental campaign performed at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany, are presented. RISING (Rare ISotope Investigations at GSI) constitutes a major new experimental program in European nuclear structure physics research aimed at using relativistic energy (typically around 1 GeV per nucleon) projectile fragmentation reactions to populate nuclei
Mortality and causes of death in a Swedish series of systemic sclerosis patients
OBJECTIVES: To analyse survival rates and the causes of death in a systemic sclerosis (SSc) population, and to evaluate the occurrence of fatal malignant neoplasms and their possible association with oral cyclophosphamide (CYC) treatment. METHODS: Survival was calculated for 249 SSc patients followed up for up to 13 years. Mean (SD) follow up was 5.8 (4.2) years. The 49 decreased patients were sub

R-type Ca2+-channel-evoked CICR regulates glucose-induced somatostatin secretion
Pancreatic islets have a central role in blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to insulin-producing beta-cells and glucagon-secreting alpha-cells, the islets contain somatostatin-releasing delta-cells(1). Somatostatin is a powerful inhibitor of insulin and glucagon secretion(2). It is normally secreted in response to glucose(3) and there is evidence suggesting its release becomes perturbed in dia
Safety Politics and Risk Perceptions in Malaysian Industry
The thesis concerns risk and safety in manufacturing companies in a developing country. Risk and safety is viewed as integral to the social relations between management and labour. The Malaysian case presents a historical conjuncture of this conflict theme, which is very different from that of its Western genesis. On this basis, the primary objective of the thesis is defined as an effort to escape
