The Effect of Cooled EGR on Emissions and Performance of a Turbocharged HCCI Engine

This paper discusses the effects of cooled EGR on a turbocharged multi-cylinder HCCI engine. A six-cylinder, 12-liter, Scania D12 truck engine is modified for HCCI operation. It is fitted with port fuel injection of ethanol and n-heptane and cylinder pressure sensors for closed-loop combustion control. The effects of EGR are studied in different operating regimes of the engine. During idle, low sp

Challenging Gender Stereotypes using Virtual Pedagocical Characters

This paper explores motivational and cognitive effects of more neutral or androgynous-looking versus more feminine-looking and masculine-looking virtual characters. A user study is presented, in which 158 students, aged 17-19, encountered four virtual characters that were visually manipulated to represent gender stereotypicality versus androgyny. On the one hand we explored students’ attitudes tow

The ethical contract as a tool in organic animal husbandry.

This article explores what an ethic for organic animal husbandry might look like, departing from the assumption that organic farming is substantially based in ecocentric ethics. We argue that farm animals are necessary functional partners in sustainable agroecosystems. This opens up additional ways to argue for their moral standing. We suggest an ethical contract to be used as a complementary to t

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Auxiliary Power Units for Heavy Duty Trucks

This paper explores the potentials of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as 3 kW auxiliary power units for trucks and military vehicles operating on diesel fuel. Various issues are discussed, e.g., the requirements and specifications for the unit as well as the advantages, challenges, and development issues for SOFCs in such applications. System design and analysis are carried out. The major component

External Mycelia of Mycorrhizal Fungi - responses to elevated N in forest ecosystems

Popular Abstract in Swedish De flesta växter lever i symbios med mykorrhizasvampar. Mycorrhizal roots constitute the interface between the plant and the soil, and almost every fine root of forest trees in nitrogen-limited boreal and temperate forests is colonised by ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. The mycelia of EM and ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) fungi are very important for plant N uptake and N cycling in forest soils. Earlier labo

High-resolution study of the C-12(gamma,p gamma')B-11 reaction using a HpGe detector to resolve excited states of B-11 through the observation of their gamma-ray decays

Relative populations of states in 11B following the 12C(,p)11B reaction have been measured with high resolution using a 70% HpGe detector to observe decay rays from the residual nucleus. The triplet of states near 7 MeV in 11B are resolved and the measured populations compared to previous data. The analysis includes a consideration of -proton angular correlations, which was not made in the previou
