Course 15 credits • YIDC02
Get acquainted with the fascinating Yiddish culture through nine historical films that in different ways shed light on the development of Jewish culture during the 20th century.
Teaching – spring semester 2021
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect our education and most of the teaching must take place completely digitally until further notice. Pay attention to the information in the schedule and/or in Canvas – the information is continuously adjusted based on current decisions and recommendations.
During the course, nine Yiddish films will be shown. These films are taken from the golden age of Yiddish film that emerged during the first half of the 20th century and these films will be the starting point for an introductory discussion of some important currents in modern Yiddish culture in Eastern and Central Europe, the United States and the Soviet Union.
The main aim of the course is to demonstrate how the films portray important themes in modern, Jewish culture: homelessness, emigration, dissolution of family traditions and secularization. All films shown are subtitled in English and no knowledge of the Yiddish language is needed.
