Grammatikseminarium: Timo Buchholz (University of Cologne), "Effects of prosody and continuation on propositional anaphor resolution"

15 May 2025 13:15 to 15:00 Seminar

There is a group of multiclausal constructions that on the one hand can introduce new propositional content via its own clause and on the other hand treat that content as if it were already known and not up for discussion. Because of this ambivalence, such constructions pose an interesting test case for theories of discourse and information structure: under what conditions can such content be built upon in subsequent discourse, if at all? I present experimental evidence from propositional anaphor resolution tasks on two such constructions in German: adverbial obwohl-clauses with a violation-of-expectation reading, testing for different types of continuation, and clauses embedded under factive verbs, testing both continuation and different prosodic realizations. We will see that both prosody and continuations interacting with the common ground status of these clauses can considerably affect whether their content is accessible, albeit likely due to different mechanisms.
