Nobel Peace Prize 2012

Today October 12 2012 the European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The motivation of the Committee is that since its foundation the EU has been a force for peace: first between the two adversaries from World War II, France and Germany, and later on for the wider continent. The award asks to put the current economic woes of the Union in perspective and encourages a refocus on the achievements of the past 50 years. This event is important, as it highlights yet again the importance of the European Union in the international context. This is a recognition of its role in the contemporary world. For us, Europeanists, it is even more of a reason to be certain that our object of study, Europe, continues to be significant in the wider perspective. It will continue to be our task to analyze and try to understand it better. The Peace Prize award has been received with a mixed applause. It is our duty as researchers to listen to and examine all the voices that are now being heard. It remains clear though that Europe and the European Union still merit our attention.
