The course introduces different theories of translation, from classical contributions to modern theories that build on semiotics, the general science of meaning. Central questions dealt with include the nature of the act of translation, the goal situation of translation and the difficulties that arise due to differences in language structure as well as the underlying cultures difficulties which increase during translation between different semiotic resources. The course is divided up into various parts which deal with translation within one and the same language, translation from one language to another and translation from one semiotic resource to another, e.g. from language to film or picture.
