The course focuses on the Latin American literary "boom" of the 1960s and 1970s, but it also discusses literary works from both before and after this period. Authors from Chile and Argentina in the south to Mexico and Cuba in the north are discussed. Particular attention is paid to García Márquez, Vargas Llosa, Fuentes and Cortázar. To exemplify both the continuity and the change after the boom authors such as Puig and Allende are discussed. Similarities and differences with contemporary European and North American literary currents are placed in focus. In addition, the student further develops his/her proficiency in using Spanish in speech and writing.
The course is included in the Master of Arts programme in Literature – Culture – Media with a specialisation in Spanish literature. It is also offered as a single course.
