The course deals with methods dealing with the description of language change over time and space and with the establishment of the link between genetically related languages and the reconstruction of hypothetically previous stages in these languages. Various explanations of language change are introduced and discussed. In addition the course deals with the classification of various languages and language groups with regard to their genetic and typological affiliation.
