LING-SEMINAR: Kim Kraft (U of Washington, U of Basque Country): Learning Swedish beyond the classroom: a qualitative longitudinal study of learner experiences
Learning Swedish beyond the classroom: a qualitative longitudinal study of learner experiences through the lens of self-determination theory
This presentation reports on an in-progress qualitative longitudinal study examining the experiences of English-speaking adults learning Swedish beyond the classroom while living in Sweden. Guided by a framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the study explores how learners’ psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness interact with their environment as they pursue language learning independently. Over the past eight months, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants. This presentation will outline the study’s background, theoretical framework, qualitative longitudinal methodology, and preliminary insights into emerging themes and patterns resulting from thematic analysis of learners’ narratives.
